Scenery x 1000

Just visited Jan '21. First time 60 yo Nordic skier, so took a lesson first. Rachel was an excellent instructor. I did the trails around Town Center first, absolutely gorgeous on a bright sunny, cold day. Very well groomed trails helped, although I can state unequivocally Nordic skiing is not easy and is a great cardio workout. After Town Center, I headed to the West trails. Parked around Peanut Lake and did Pooches Paradise (the dogs are a plus; contagious to see their joy of being outdoors). Again, beautiful. But after being on my skis for the btter part of 6 hours, I was gassed. Second day I headed back to the West trails, as they are much more isolated than Town Center which is much more wide open, which is what I was looking for. But it was snowing, hard, with 25-30 MPH winds! Sounds appealing, right? But if you're a newbie, it made for an excruciating cardio workout:). The tracks were pretty much filled with the falling snow, or the snow from the skating skiers. I'd describe it at plowing through peanut butter most of the way. I did make it all the way from Pooches Paradise, to Mike's Mile turnaround, and back (beauty and solitude-I barely saw another person). It has to be one of the most gorgeous places on earth. But my calves were screaming by then. Bottom line, really glad I tried Nordic for the first time. Great workout. But I opted to head to Mt. Crested Butte for some gravity-assisted alpine skiing my last day!

Star bursts of snow
Mar 2020 • Couples
The Nordic center charges $20 per day. The trail out to the bridge past magic meadows is one of the most scenic in North America. Loved pooches paradise. A couple extra benches would be nice. I sat on one and watched the snow melting in the pines. Blue trail has a couple steep spots but heck you can side step if scared.

Beautiful Groomed Trails and Updated Equipment
Feb 2020 • Couples
We rented cross country skis from the Nordic Center and skied on the well groomed Peanut Lake trails. The staff at the Nordic Center was helpful and the boots were comfortable. The trails we chose were very scenic and it was a beautiful sunny day! The trails did have some hills which were fun going down but a bit challenging to go up! We look forward to cross country skiing again!

Best Cross Country Skiing Done So Far

OMG!! This is one of our new yearly trips!! Come to Crested Butte every summer, and now a winter destination. Did 7.75 miles, and that was only a portion. Beautiful scenery, multiple skill levels. Friendly people. Love it!!

Best use of your 5th day if you have a 4 day Epic pass
Mar 2019 • Couples
The nordic skiing is awesome! I suggest either bringing or renting your equipment here and then heading to the yurt to eat your packed lunch and thermos of hot tea. The only downer is the curvy icy road you may start on carrying your skis, which doesn't really feel safe. We hiked instead through the village this time and started our ski in the flats off of Butte Road. Got a good view of the village that way but it was kind of time consuming. Lots of people with Epic passes for downhill took a day off; we prefer instead to spend one day of the week doing cross country. The view and peace is special and we had no regrets about not being on the mountain doing downhill.

Magic Meadows Yurt Dinner
Mar 2019 • Friends
I have gone to the Yurt Dinner multiple times, with the most recent 3/9/19. It was once again a wonderful experience. The five course meal was delicious. The staff & service was great. The music is at the perfect level. You can hear it, but it does not interfere with discussion. Expect a very leisurely meal.

Great place to snowshoe
Feb 2019 • Friends
The Nordic Center is a great place to snowshoe among other things. My Niece and I had a great day of snowshoeing, there are many trails to choose from. The trails we saw were all groomed and the scenery is beautiful. The staff at the Nordic Center were friendly and helpful. I would recommend if you are in the area, it's great for all levels.

Mislead us on difficulty of run
Feb 2019 • Couples
Very friendly & helpful staff but they suggested a trail that was quite difficult. But, they knew it was my first time. I feel several times, had extreme difficulty going up the hills and actually took my skis off and walked the last stretch home. A day later I reviewed their trail map only to realize we were sent to an Int/Adv course. We were very disappointed. We thought we would never try again but now that we know there are many EASY runs we might consider it.

Magic Meadows Yurt

The yurt dining experience is like nothing else we've done. You start at the nordic center and get fitted for snow shoes or cross-country skis. My husband and I chose snow shoes since this did not seem like the time to try something brand new to us (in the dark). From there the group is driven to the trail head and everyone skis/snow shoes down a path that's about 1.5 miles (felt more like 2) to a yurt. It's fairly dark outside by this time and one of every two people is given a headlamp to wear because the trail is not lit. If you have your own to bring for more light, I would recommend it.

Arriving at the yurt is such a welcome experience, it's nicely appointed inside and WARM. There's an open bar serving beer, wine and select cocktails the night we were there. Seats are assigned in advance so if you are in a couple you will be sat with another couple - the smallest table size is 4.

The multi-course meal was fancier than we would usually eat at a restaurant, and very tasty. We were all surprised at the portion size of the main course - it was huge! We were in the yurt for probably about 3 hours.

Both my favorite and least favorite part of the evening was the walk back to the trail head. The visibility of the stars is incredible, I have never seen the sky look so spectacular! But it was COLD, about 15 degrees F and windy and the walk is much longer when it's colder and you have a full stomach. We dressed warmer than was recommended and were both still cold. My recommendation is to dress warmer than you think you should.

Overall it was a very neat experience that I would recommend to everyone!

Everything one could possibly ask for in such a group! Super knowledgable and friendly people who are super excited to help and share their experience. And they maintain trails, many free. Wow!
