Chautauqua Park has some gorgeous hiking right on the edge of downtown Boulder. Great views of the city and a great variety of skill levels. The restaurant is fabulous with gorgeous views of the mountains. Highly recommend a visit.

I've been here several times and always enjoy a great hike. Other hikers are generally respectful. Parking is easy. The trails are moderate at low altitudes. Trails are good for all ages, even young children can enjoy a hike here. But the upper trails will...More

Spontaneoustrip gave a great and comprehensive review of the Royal Arch Trail, so I only have a minimal amount to add. Regarding Parking: You have to pay at a pay station in advance and judge about how long you will be out on the trail....More

This park is huge right up against the Flat Iron mountains. There's a large area at the beginning, in the middle of a circular road where there is parking. Before you start on any walking or hiking trails, there is also a ranger building with...More

Chataqua is probably one of the most magical things about Boulder. You literally head up into the mountains and woods right off the residential streets, and can almost feel secluded a short distance from town. There is a theater and restaurant in the park, grass...More

I have done several hikes here and all were stunning and beautiful. One of my favorite things about living in Boulder is the accessibility of places like Chataqua. If you plan on visiting on a weekend take the shuttle from the school down the street...More

This was the first major thing we did on our trip to Boulder, and it was the perfect way to kick it off. The views of the Flatirons are gorgeous. The trails are long enough to explore to your heart's content, but easy enough for...More

We happened to "luck into" a parking place when we arrived around 930, so would strongly recommend go early. They have water stations there to fill up your camelbak and/or canteen and you will need plenty of water on a warm day. Ranger was very...More

Bears are not a problem here. Mostly bear sightings would be generally harmless brown bears, not the dangerous grizzly bears, and brown bear sightings are rare. But mountain lions are in the vicinity, often spotted in... More

There is a visitors center. I would suggest checking in with the visitors center for most recent wildlife reports. Be safe ... use common sense ... never ever engage a bear if encountered. Read up on what to do if you... More

No, it's about a mile to the top of the flatirons: google "Chautauqua trailhead' and you can find a map with distances. I walked this last Saturday, and it was icy. I wore crampons but many people braved it in sneakers... More
