Gold miners first explored Moaning Cavern in 1851, but Native Americans had revered the site for centuries because of the haunting, moaning sounds coming from the entrance. Today, visitors enter by descending a metal spiral staircase or by rappelling by rope165 feet down. Or make reservations for an exciting three-hour Adventure Trip beginning with optional rappel. Above ground activities: gemstone mining, gold panning, free nature trail. School program available. Open every day, year round. We try to maintain our operational hours at Trip Advisor, but please see our web site for the most accurate information.

An Interesting Experience!

We were the first tour of the day and ended up with a private tour of the cave. The number of stairs sounds daunting, but it was very doable. I am an active 58 year old, but not an athlete and was able to do it comfortably. We learned about the history of the cave and the many amazing formations... More

A great cave to explore with many impressive formations. The entrance to the cave is located inside the visitors center building. The descend starts with a few narrow passages (not suitable for those who feel uncomfortable in tight spaces) and then opens up to the main hall. An iron spiral staircase takes you down to the cave floor and allows... More

My family took the guided trip down the caverns. The 45min tour was very interesting and our guide was awesome! There is a lot of steep steps so if you have any physical limitations this is not a trip for you. My 2 teenagers did the zipline tour afterwards. The price of $45pp was too expensive for me to pay... Last week, my teenage son and I did the Adventure Tour at Moaning Caverns. It was a 2 1/2 hour guided tour creeping and crawling - and pushing and pulling - through the bowels of the earth. Because we went on a weekday in the winter, we were fortunate to have a private tour. Our tour guide, Tim, was just... More

We've been staying in Angels Camp, CA and wanted something fun to do so we decided to check out Moaning Cavern. It's a 45-minute guided tour that incudes a 100-foot spiral staircase that leads down to 165 feet below ground. The formations in the cavern are outstanding and our guide, Jeremy, was friendly and informative. The best part of all... More

Yesterday I did the Adventure package at Moaning Cavern. OMGit was amazing. I have to give Kudos to Brandon who was an amazing guide. I am in the 50's club and he navigated me and kept me calm when my comfort levels were being stretched and in some spots more then others. The views and formations were simply beautiful. Mother... Great fun, fantastic guide who was very knowledgable and pretty funny. No idea this cavern even existed so was very pleasantly surprised. Highly recommend as a way to while away an hour or so.

Myself my BFF and my kids went to Moaning Caverns Sunday. Not too many people there so we had a small tour group and had no wait time. After paying and signing our waiver, down the very narrow (watch your head) stairs we went, which then brought us to a ledge overlooking the main chamber of the cavern. Spectacular! Keep... More

We stopped to see the caverns on a whim. The cavern was very interesting. The climb up and down was pretty steep but worth it. We enjoyed all of the sites but it is very simple and quick. Our tour guide was extremely knowledgeable and friendly. We didn't try any of the other features but they offered a lot of... More

California has a lot going for it when it comes to nature but,in my opinion, it is pretty weak in the cave department! Having always loved caves and having been to some of the best (Mammoth Cave, Wind Cave, Fantastic Caverns) Moaning Cavern doesn't really hold up. That said, it is a small cave so if you can tolerate the... More
