This state park is awesome, it sits on the east shore of Donner Lake, has camping, fishing, boating, hiking trails, creeks & streams, beaches and lagoons to lazily float on! The historical museum is a must see for first time visitors, it will give you an appreciation of our local history, and it's all in the town of Truckee!!

Missed the museum the last time I was in the Tahoe area so it was great to finally be able to visit! It's small but full of local history and of the Donner Party. Informative exhibits and don't miss the movie. Easy to imagine how horrible their winter was because of all the snow the area received in January. Unthinkable... More

I always wanted to learn more about the Donner party since the museum is only a few hours away from where I was raised in the bay area. I made a trip with my family to visit and found some very interesting tidbits on display at the museum. More interesting was the helpful park ranger, Nicky Combs, who was very... More

The new museum is very nice, with excellent exhibits, both stationary and video with all sorts of information about the Donner party and folks who traveled the well worn path westward. The trails and paths around the lake are superb in the summer and the views during the winter when the road is passable are very nice

The museum was very educational and the signs were easy to read. The movie is definitely dated, but we actually found it to provide a lot of information very quickly. The entire museum with the movie can be viewed in less than an hour and a half. It's a great little trip to take. We were staying on the north... More

Donner state park is located on Donner lake near Truckee California. In the summer it offers recreation on and around Donner lake . There are good camping facilities , some near the lake and some on a stream. This is the area where the Donner party were stuck in winter and you can walk to where one of the cabins... More

Learned so much from the exhibits! Great job on those. The movie, however, is very dated (and not in a good way). Totally worth the stop in your way into or out of TAHOE.

The Donner Memorial Park and China Cove Trail is an easy 2.7 mile loop that leads to spectacular views of Donner Lake and en excellent return leg through a wooded area. The paths are well maintained and the visitor center provides terrific history through professional displays and outstanding staff to tell the story of Donner Pass. Parking is $5 at... More

This is one of those places that by stopping in for a visit, you walk away with a much deeper appreciation for the entire surrounding area past its obvious beauty. Never again will one drive over Donner summit without thinking of the tragic plight of theDonner Party so many years ago.
