We first experienced Cline when attending the annual Wine and Jazz event five or ten years ago. We were impressed with the grounds, the friendly staff, the California Missions Museum and the festive atmosphere. Enough so that we joined the club and have attended numerous events over the years, many times taking family and friends with us. We've even met new friends at these events and were introduced to the family sister winery across the street, Jacuzzi. (Which is worthy of a review all it's own.) Where we also joined the wine club, started attending events and even have just gone there with friends to enjoy a picnic lunch and share a bottle of wine...or two! :-)
The grounds at Cline are spacious and beautiful. The great lawn, the ponds, the landscaping are all wonderful. Similar in ambiance to that of a great, old estate. And, you can share food, drink and laughter with people while you're there. Even people you've just met.
We attended our first Wine and Grilled Cheese pairing yesterday which inspired me to write this review. This has become one of Cline's annual sold out events and was really interesting and delicious.
We have found the Cline and Jacuzzi wineries to be better in many ways, though not as steeped in history and lineage, as any in the Napa Valley. And Cline and Jacuzzi (and other wineries in the Carneros Valley) are much more accessible to Bay Area Residents than those in the now overcrowded well known destinations north.
I should also give a shout out to the wonderful staff at Cline who have always been kind, helpful and respectful to us on our many visits.
I actually hesitate to write this review. Over the years, we've noted ever larger crowds as Cline and have been supportive of their obvious growth and success. It is our understanding that a couple of the grandchildren are beginning to move into executive positions there and pushing forward in new and wonderful directions. That has made some of the events crowded as is their tasting room on summer weekends. But, on reflection, I realize that this has not dampened our enjoyment of these events in any way. We are still accommodated and we still have a great time. We just might have to wait in line a bit longer. Which gives us more time to meet others.
The only negative I can even think of is the infamous, Carneros winds that come up on summer afternoons and can just about blow an outdoor event away. But then, that's worthless complaining

We were about 35 minutes late for our appointment on a Friday evening, still we were greeted politely and accommodated to a seat of our choice.
The location is very beautiful and has a museum (closed because of COVID) and is also the site of the last mission built in 1823.
The wines we tasted were well explained to us. The bet one we like was the Gewürztraminer, we ended up buying a bottle. In genera, we found that the white wines in Sonoma were one of the best ones we have ever tasted. We strolled around the property and one of the staff just stopped by and explained us the history of the location and how the Carrneros breeze affect the quality of the wines they produce. He also told us not to miss the 2 small Sicilian donkeys they had as pets. We saw them, they were so cute and friendly.
Great wines and very friendly people, highly recommended.

Lovely grounds and wine are the hallmark of Cline. With a vast vineyard and site of the last Mission to be founded along the Mission trail, this winery, with ponds, palms, picnic areas and the Mission Museum with scale models of all the missions in one place curated by the late Mrs Cline, is worth a stop. We enjoy every visit here, their wines are wonderful, and we are really enjoying the older varietals like Barbera and Viognier that are making a come back but make no mistake, their old vines turn out some serious Zin.

There were 2 waiting staff on duty when we visited. One spent nearly all his time with a single customer who drank far too much wine to be able to drive home. Meanwhile the other customers who had also paid their $25 go tasting had to wait for the other wait staff who was also doing other duties. All the other people tasting were given extra wine to taste, however for some reason we missed out on this.
The service here was exceptionally bad, the staff ignored us (except when it came to paying). I have never been to a winery where the standard of service was so low.

Beautiful location with gardens and ponds and picnic tables. If you are not going to be tasting ( and giving tips), the staff come dangerously close to being rude. First, we were sad that the museum we had come to see is permanently closed. Then when I told the staff we don’t drink during the day and drive, but wanted to have a picnic and buy some bottles of wine on the way out, the response was chilly. I had brought a minimal picnic for our friends thinking we could supplement it in their store, but there really wasn’t picnic food to buy. We chose a table across the pond so we wouldn’t interfere with their tastings, but a staff person I had already talked to, came out mid picnic to ask again if we wanted to do a tasting. When I went to buy the wine, it took a long time to get waited on. Then amusingly, the bottle I asked for was brought out in a wine bag but the bottle I had picked up from the shelf was not also put in the bag. I am short, the counter was tall, and I really struggled, but did not get help. My friend went in to buy a couple bottles and waited so long without anybody acknowledging her that she gave up.
We weren’t sure whether this was age discrimination or just their attempt to make sure we didn’t come back again since we didn’t do their lucrative tasting. Tastings are $25 a person but that can be waived if you buy two bottles of wine per person which is at least $60.

Thank you Kate for your detailed review. We do have a picnic program, the Pondside experience, available every day of the week - optional picnic basket and/or charcuterie board and 2 bt of wine minimum. I do apologize for the delivery to your request to simply purchase and take them home. We're all about safe driving, so I do appreciate the thoughtfulness behind the request. I will be sure to address the pain-points you shared with the tasting room manager and team for future similar exchanges, so we may provide better service in similar situations. Appreciate you taking the time to let us know and looking forward to welcoming you back onsite!

1st I visited this lovely winery. My wife and I were treated really well at their regular tasting room. Because of how nice the staff was and how good the wine was, we joined their Pedulum wine club. We started receiving the shipments of wine without any problem. Then, we went back about a year later this time as wine club members, we were sent to this separate tasting room. We were told wine club members go to a separate place. Once we got there is where our issues began. We told the server at this section we were club members. She asked what our names were. We thought this was weird but we complied. Then, the server asked what we wanted to taste. So, we asked to follow the tasting list they had. We were poured the tiniest amount of wine to taste. We ended up revisiting some of the wines because the server was very stingy with the pours. It turns out no other wines were offered to us to taste and we were told that was it for the tasting. When we tasted for the first time before we joined as club members, we were offered every varietal we wanted and the pours were generous. Not sure why this now different. Needless to say after we go home, I cancelled the wine club membership. But I thought this was disappointing and not what I had experienced at other wineries.

Hi Travelermind,
Thank you for sharing your recent experience at Cline Family Cellars. We strive to offer the best hospitality to all of our guests and appreciate you contacting us and giving us a chance to improve.
To clarify, we ask for names to verify club memberships, so only our club members taste in our club room and get access to the club discounts, but it sounds like our staff didn't make that clear, and for that, we apologize.
We also, by law, have to limit the amount of wine we pour each guest, but in no way want our guests to feel like their servers aren't taking care of them. We will address this with our staff and to make sure none of our guests feel unwelcome again.
We thank you for your patronage in the past and hope you'll give us another chance in the future.

It was interesting to compare wine tasting in Napa/ Sonoma to the one in Michigan.
Obviously, California has better wines overall, however speaking of the tasting itself and hospitality- Michigan (Traverse City Area) wins.
Cline wine was good, we bought some.

My husband and I visited on a Sunday afternoon - parking lot was full and so was the tasting room. We did have to wait a bit to be served, but once served had a great experience with Ted. They have different tasting flights - my husband and I chose different ones. We left happily with 2 bottles of red wine. Recommend a visit :)

The wine and charcuterie board were all good, but compared to the tasting we enjoyed just the day before, Cline paled in comparison. The venue is nice but not WOW. They seated us in adirondack chairs with a low table between us. It was awkward and uncomfortable to try to reach the food and drinks.

Thank you for the valuable feedback. Please always feel welcome to ask if another table is available if the low chairs are not comfortable for you. Hope you got the explore the expansive grounds at the ranch too. Any tips on what the other wine tasting you did previous day hit right in comparison, we're all ears and feel free to email me at mgatto@clinecellars.com to share. Would love to learn more! Have a great weekend and hope to see you soon again at the winery

During Covid, we visited one of our favorite wine tasting/Cellars today. Our wine Guide and now friend, Joi, took us through the Pendulum Club Tasting, adding comparison vintages of several wines. She waas friendly, knowledgable and fun to visit with. A new comer to wine country, she was a great hostes. The wines at Cline are superb. That is why we have been Pendulum Clubbers for several years. The outdoor setting was beautiful and very comfortable. We have enjoyed the grounds, pre-Covid many times.
