Located just a few steps south of historic Sonoma Town Plaza, the Sonoma Valley Museum of Art presents rotating exhibitions of modern and contemporary art. The Museum has built an impressive reputation during its first twelve years with shows featuring works by Picasso, Rembrandt, and Goya as well as acclaimed contemporary artists like David Hockney and Sandow Birk. Most exhibitions run 2-3 months. The Museum is also a community gathering place for art history lectures, community events, classes and celebrations. A new reference library features 2,500 art books. A small cafe in the front of the building provides coffee and tea and is a gathering place for Sonoma art lovers. It's a Museum with a big reputation but small enough to be a fun add-on to a visit to Sonoma. Convenient to restaurants on the Town Plaza, an hour enjoying the current exhibition is the perfect arts complement to Sonoma's food and wine offerings.

Special local gem for art lovers

The museum is world class and easy to experience during a short break from dining, shopping and wine tasting on the square. The new museum shop is terrific too.

We expected an art gallery and sales of local art. how wrong! We saw two excellent and thought-provoking exhibits, enhanced by a very good docent tour. One was rug weaving from Egypt, the other a photographer and exposition on the effects of a major dam in Ethiopia. Really fascinating and unexpected. GO!

We saw an unusual show of small subtle works by Richard Deibenkorn. They specialize in unusual and you will be fortunate when you make time for a stop.

We happened to hit this gem on a free monthly day but would have paid to see their exhibit. Very well done with a video presentation and children's activity area too. For the size this was very impressive.

Museum is a nice place to visit if you have an hour or so to take in some lovely art. It is easy to find when you explore the quaint shops in Sonoma.

This little museum is a gem. When I was there, an exhibition of Richard Diebenkorn works on paper had just opened. It was well-curated; I also learned a lot about him and his work from the didactics (signs next to the works and overviews painted on the wall).

A nice local museum with many examples of local artists. Wine country themes are of course, predominate. There are some good examples of ancient Spanish art, probably from original settlers. Worthwhile to visit, knowledgeable docents.

I wish our hometown would have a museum just like this. Perfect. We spent around an hour at the 'Realism' exhibit and loved it. The art is varied and the information provided about the artists and their approach to their work was just perfect. Great gem of a find for art-lovers. I was inspired! Would love to return to Sonoma... More

We always stop by and are surprised at many of the shows they get. It's a nice space and very accessible. A few years ago there was a very surprising Picasso exhibit of work we've never seen It's worth a stroll down the one block from the Plaza
