The area
Address
Neighbourhood: Santa Monica
Santa Monica is a coastal town that maintains a balance as a tourist destination and as an area with a thriving local culture. On the beach, bikers, roller-bladers, runners and walkers move along the famed bike path enjoying the beautiful Los Angeles weather. The solar-powered Ferris wheel at the Santa Monica pier spins high above the water, while park revelers scream with delight riding the roller coaster. Inland from the beach, Third Street Promenade bustles with shoppers and street performers, where every block seems to have a musical or acrobatic act drawing crowds giving Santa Monica both the feeling of a laid-back beach town and a major commercial hub.

    Definitely worth a few hours
To me it felt like Fremont Street with a chill vibe and laid back attitude. Fun people watching and decent buskers like drummers and acoustic guitarists. Found nice hoodies, with at least one half off Dodgers hoodie. Great place to hang out in. Could use more public outdoor seating and fewer homeless guys. BTW if go on Saturday you get a Farmers Market bonus. Awesome!

    Thriving shopping destination near ocean
We went on Black Friday and it was very busy. We parked in the ramp. It is free if you stay 90 minutes or less. We parked twice and stayed an hour and 20 minutes each time, so our parking was free. We walked to Bernie’s Beanery, Santa Monica Pier, Cielo Cafe coffee, and other shops and streets. It is a thriving shopping destination. I recommend.

    Too sweet to miss!
We a lovely time sitting around the firepit! Ice is precious inside and gives all the wintery holiday vibes right here in downtown Santa Monica. Jimmy took such great care of us, we plan to make it an annual tradition!

It should be on the list to hang out there and go for shopping, eating, and getting the general sense of the city there, so it is the main place for such activities. It is very close to the beach and it is parallel to the shore.

We visited at night. It was very very busy. Pretty lights in the trees. Overpriced. Once we wandered a street or so away from the Main Street, we felt unsafe.

Actually really unpleasant experience. The staff were just super grumpy and it was so stressful. My kids got berated for being in the wrong area even though there was no clear boundary. I saw a French couple fully get yelled at for picking up one of the skater helpers because he didn't see the sign that said it was for rent. No cashier, so they make you pay a 20% service fee through their website even though you are right there. Just the opposite of fun. If you have to go ice skating, try The Toyota Center 20 minutes south. You can skip this though- or just walk past and you can get the vibe without the stress. The manager told me people get hurt all the time and they have to call the paramedics sometimes so that maybe tells you what you need to know.

Disappointed. The price has gone up and they now limit your time for a $20 ticket to just one hour. If you have kids that are trying to learn, or want to take a break for a hot chocolate, an hour is not enough time and it’s a rip off for $20 a person (including kids). Not going back under this owner.

Not what it used to be. Lots of empty units and not much happening. Was excited to re-visit but changed a lot in last few years

Not a lot to say about this, we came a weekday morning. Like previous people have said, it was a quiet pretty empty shopping centre, I’d say about 50% of the people were homeless, sleeping on benches, wheeling shopping trolleys or talking erratically to themselves , it’s really sad to see the scale of the homelessness here. There weren’t really any tourists and the shopping mall had a few shops that we have at my local shopping stall. If I did this again, I’d probably just skip ahead to the Santa Monica pier.

Normally I read one-star reviews and think ok these are the grumpy people with nothing better to do than complain. But after my sad and shocking visit to Santa Monica's Third Street Promenade area yesterday, these one-star reviews are spot on. Many vacant stores, the ones that are there are chain stores nothing special. Too many homeless, saw a lady washing her hair in one of the fountains. Witnessed a deranged man screaming bloody murder at a gorgeous young woman taking a smoke break. No security around. I used to enjoy bringing my kids here 12-14 years ago. Now, I wouldn't advise anyone to bring children here. There are plenty of other choices if you're looking for shopping and places to eat. For those looking to move to one of the over-priced new apartments near the Metro, you will be stepping around homeless people and the filth they leave on the sidewalks, I am very sorry to say. We need to address homelessness, but adding a ton of condensed overpriced housing is not the answer to our housing issues.

Situated a couple of blocks from the Pier, this is the main shopping precinct of Santa Monica. It has a number of high end stores and cafes. It also has some really cool dinosaur fountains. But it really isn’t anything special and you won’t miss anything if you don’t go.
