We had an amazing time - two adults and two teenagers. You must be reasonably fit as we started in Moss Landing and paddled out for about 2-1/2 or 3 hours. We felt very safe the entire time and the equipment was all in excellent...More
Our guide's name was Dave and he is awesome! Part of our family vacation was this kayak tour through Venture Quest - KayakSantaCruz in the ocean out of Moss Landing. The harbor seals were nice to see. The sea otters were sooo adorable. But Holy...More
We went on a really awesome kayak trip with our fantastic guide Heidi! She was a lot of fun, knew so much about the ocean and its residents and the whole environment and guided us to places where we could see several sea otters, seals,...More
What an experience!! We had the chance to meet Dave for kayaking with whales in Moss Landing. We firstly were a little bit afraid about kayaking in the ocean but really this is a moment to experience!! I think we cannot get a better guide...More
My wife and I did the Whale Tour with Dave from Moss Landing. We began about 20 minutes earlier because he was concerned with the wind. Dave was great at giving directions for the kayak and what we may experience once we were out in...More
This is so easy to do! We have tried kayaking out of the Santa Cruz Harbor, but it is a stretch getting out and then your time is limited. Access from the Wharf allows you to head right toward the kelp areas with otters, seals...More
We had an experience we will never forget! We signed up for the whales at moss landing and otters at Elkhorn Slough tour, but spent so much time with the whales we didn't get to the Slough. Barb headed out first to scout the area...More

He took time to show us everything in the bay, from the...More
My daughters and I went kayak whale watching this morning with Venture Quest and our guides Dave and Stewart. It was a cold, rainy morning but that didn't stop us from having a great paddle out around the coast near Davenport. The views of that...More
Dave, the owner is Professional, safe and just daring enough to keep trips interesting. Try going on a trip with him out of Moss Landing. Awesome wildlife and wonderful staff. I Love kayaking with Venture Quest.

I went on the Kayak trip in the fall and I imagine it would be similar to a March/April trip. It's generally pretty cool in the bay and cloudy. We were comfortable in shorts/swimsuits that can get wet and a t-shirt with a comfortable breathable top. You will be paddling on the open ocean which is substantial exercise and should keep you reasonably warm. I would also wear shoes that can get wet or sandals with straps (tevas).
I am not sure about an 11 year old. It comes down to paddling, which requires much effort that would be beyond the abilities of a child. If there is a strong paddler in the back of the kayak then you should be fine with a child. However, if you feel like you need two people paddling (it can get tiring on one person) then it might not be appropriate.
Hope that helps!
