Tours are by reservation only on Wednesdays and Saturdays for those 10 years & older. Admission for the 90-minute, Docent-led tours is $20 per person. Designated in 2009 as Santa Barbara's 4th National Historic Landmark, the Casa del Herrero, built in 1925, stands today as one of the finest examples of Spanish Colonial Revival architecture. The creative manifestation of St. Louis industrialist George Fox Steedman, Casa del Herrero (House of the Blacksmith) reflects the visionary passions of its 'dream team' of designers: reknowned architect, George Washington Smith, landscape architects Lockwood de Forest and Francis T. Underhill, and antiquarians Arthur Byne and Mildred Stapley, who also helped outfit the well-known Hearst Castle.

As a child I grew up running around the paths and orchards of this lovely estate. My grandparents were the head grounds keeper and house staff for the Bass family that the estate belonged to. If you like Spanish architecture, this George Washington Smith estate is one of the most beautiful there is. Stroll around the gardens, there are some... More

We had a private tour of this magnificent property. It is a fine example of George Washington Smith architecture. Owned and cared for by one family the home is very interesting and well worth a visit. Excellent docents.

Palatial mansions were built before the tax code made it necessary to hire a phalanx of lawyers to avoid paying them, when imported labor and global treasures were widely available for the taking. Some of the very wealthy during the Golden Era had great taste. Some did not. Those who had both taste and money (or money and excellent advisers)... More

The year is 1925. An industrialist and Harvard grad from St. Louis, George Fox Steedman, builds a summer home in Montecito. He fills it with genuine medieval antiques purchased in Spain, and tiles made in Tunisia to his specs. He coaxes great lines from George Washington Smith, his architect. Eventually, he moves there full time and studies silversmithing as a... More

Casa del Herreero is a unique experience. A lovely estae and garden set in the beautiful landscape of Montecito. Be sure to visit Mr Steedman's workshop- a remarkable site during a spectacular priod of Santa Barbara history.

We received a very detailed tour of this George Washington Smith home built with the collaboration of owner George Stedman. The gardens are lovely, and the home is a National Landmark. Many of the innovations are truly inspired, and reflect a lot of genius on the part of Stedman, adding his plans to those of Smith, who is renowned for... More

This tour was incredible. It had so much history of the early settlement of families in Santa Barbara and the buildings and gardens that make this town so special. The tour guide was awesome with so much enthusiasm and fun stories.

Really enjoyed the walking tour through the estate. The remarkable way they have kept the home and grounds as they were a century ago is lovely and so interesting. Cozy number on the tour was delightful.
