Visited Sacramento from the UK and found this beautifully restored house. Took a tour with a warm and helpful guide (Carol) who was keen to answer any questions and engage with all the visitors. Cute little gift shop, tiny museum area and clean restrooms. And the best bit - it's TOTALLY FREE. A visit will last no more than an... More

Great way to learn something about the history of Sacramento, since this was the home of one of the state's most important historical figures.

This is a gem! Richard, our tour guide, gave a very comphensive and interesting tour of the mansion. It was a highlight of our trip to Sacremento.

We arrived at an off time on a very rainy Friday, would have had to wait 45 minutes for the next tour and really didn't have anywhere else to go. A wonderful volunteer offered to take us on our own tour and it was fabulous! She was so knowledgeable and interesting! The architecture, décor and history of the mansion are... More

This mansion is about 19,000 square feet big, home of Leland Stanford, Sr. a former California Governor. He was the founder of Stanford University and President of Southern Pacific. He had a son who died of typhoid fever and the devastated father rededicated his life to founding the university to educate young men. There are rumors that there are also... More

Take a step back into the history of our great state and great statemen. Learn more about the Sacramento chapter of the founding fathers and sons of Stanford University. A beautiful victorian home and docent lead historical tour worth the visit.

I was in Sacramento on business and had a few hours to kill. I enjoy historical architecture, so I popped in. This is a gem! The house is remarkable and my tour guide was good, too. Learning about architecture is really a history lesson, as one learns about the life and times of the era. If you enjoy this sort... More

Admission was free ad we arrived on the hour to take advantage of the tour. A remarkable job has been done in restoring the principal parts of the house to the days when the Stanfords lived in it. The guide was one of the best we've had in a long while

We visited on museum day, when they allowed self-paced tours. We received good information from the docents, and enjoyed seeing what a wealthy family home from the period looked like.

Definitely recommend this for adults. Fantastic house, very good docents, loads of history. We do not recommend taking small children here - they get bored!
