lovely afternoon activity

Quite a place with it's rich history. One really needs a guided walk to know all the various stories of this place, especially the hauntings. One finds a lot of Screech Owls adding to it's mystic. The cemetery is old and fun to walk through, just calm and peaceful as well. It's other claim to fame is it's numerous antique roses, many which are only found here and no where else. Their is various walking tours like halloween, roses and history depending on one's interest. The rose society offers rose growing tips, rose cuttings for sale and ask for volunteers to do rose pruning. I'm so glad this place was preserved.

Great history and pleasant surroundings

A great place to include in a walk through downtown or to walk. Long narrow lanes between monuments dating to the early days of Sacramento. You start out not looking at the names and dates but you can't help noticing and then you start dreaming of the stories buried all around and how they blend together in unseen ways that leave marks on us now. A good place to read poems aloud.

So much old history

My family and I visited the Old City Cemetery last year on a free-access day, a city-wide Museum day I think it was. We had a fun time exploring (so much bigger than you'd think). We even got to do a little geocaching. Make note of where the bathrooms are!

right off the I80 freeway. Most of the city's historic figures buried here and wonderfully landscaped. Good place to take your dog for a walk as less crowded than the parks.

Amazing Place to Visit

One of my favorite things to do in Sacramento. It's beautiful. They have fantastic historical information. It's shady in the summer. They offer terrific tours throughout the year (check for tour age requirements, some are not appropriate for children). You can a self guided tour as well.

A cemetery oozing with history.

As a child I use to play in this beautiful last resting place for so many of our prominent people of Sacramento. From John Sutter Jr. at the front gate to one of the "Big Four" Charles Crocker who helped build the Transcontinental Railroad. There are many interesting and historical monuments to those who founded Sacramento.

Important part of our history
Jul 2018 • Couples
We spent a couple of hours at this well maintained cemetery. We walked among the graves while at the same time saw the well maintained flowers, trees and shrubs. There is a great amount of history at the City Cemetery. Parking is very limited at the cemetery (4 spots) but there is street parking near by. We took the self-guided tour and had a beautiful day. There are benches to sit on when you want to rest or just enjoy the peace and quiet. This is truely a hidden gem
