About
Karja church was built in the beginning of 14th century. The church has retained almost unchanged its initial shape. The church is one-naved and doesn't have bell tower. On top of the altar are extant paganish magic ceiling signs that were painted during construction. In the design of the church You will mostly see elements of early and high Gothic that are combined with some roman lines.Interesting to know: Karja church is one of the richest of sculptures in the whole Northern Europe. The arcs of the church exceed the height of the walls two times.Karja church is the smallest church on Saaremaa.

I appreciate 800 years of history. And I´m sure, there are more secrets between the church walls. I mean like pilgrims route. Take Your time, do´nt hurry here.

This church dates back from the 12th/13th century and is quite unique as to its architecture and interior/exterior symbols. Definitely recommend purchasing the well-written brochure (5 EUR) which will explain much of the figures and symbols inside and outside of the church -- including various paganism symbols, the Templar crosses etc.

Beautiful church well preserved in its authentic sense. The interior has the features of gothic and medieval touches and it's impressive how it has survived this long with no damaged to exterior or interior structures. Must visit if you are in this beautiful island. Recommended you read about it before or go with a guide who knows the history.

This 14th century church is just a bit further along the raod from the Angle Windmills: you can combine the two on a day out! The inside is quite strinking with its painted walls, stained glass windows and some very interestindg sculptures. You really shouldn't miss this one if you are in the vicinity

This is very old and beautiful church, open all year round. Good to visit during christma time and also cool yourself down during hot summer days. Church without tower.

The church can be found near the Angla windmill park which is the reason why it's visited often. The church itself however is very similar to others found on the whole island. nevertheless, if you are there it's worth a visit for both the church and the scenery. the inside of the church looks a bit dark. the entrance of the church is 'guarded' by a scary looking old lady but i guess that contributes to the experience of visiting an old church

The Karja Kirik is just down the road from the Angla Windmill Hill and a wonderful old church. It was built in the 14th century and served both as a church and defensive retreat for villagers in times of strife. While the church outside is stark, inside it is just beautiful. It has beautiful wall painted designs and stained glass windows, but it also known for its very unusual sculptures which include fanciful, and somewhat scary creatures. When we approached from the outside, we could clearly see the defensive architectural plan and when we entered the church, it was bathed in light from the stained glass windows which made for a wonderful visit.
