BEWARE, this bike path is no longer safe place to walk or cycle. There are homeless encampments that span the entire 7.5 miles, mentally ill vagrants spewing threats, and the Oceanside Police can do nothing. This is a promising trail and I used to bike it years ago but now there are homeless camps surrounding the area. I had planned to walk it a couple of weeks back but a group of homeless people were having an argument near the entrance. No thanks!

If you want to take the coaster up to Oceanside with your bike, or if you want to rent a bike locally (I recommend Alan's Bike Shop at 805 S. Coast Highway, 7-gear beach cruisers in good condition), this 9 mile trail along the river is a good way to spend a half day. The whole trail is paved and in very good condition, mostly flat, and with the bike trail passing under the overpasses, there is no need to cross traffic. We got off the trail at Douglass Drive and made a detour to the Mission, which I highly recommend!…

For several miles, we walk on this paved path defined by mild inclines and dips, levee-type raised path areas, and a few bridges. The path goes on for about 9 miles but, for us pedestrians, half-way is a nice walk (one needs to go back, after all). This trip, we were there on a Saturday and the amount of bike and skate traffic was impressive. Although we did see the occasional transient, we did not feel uncomfortable (well, discomfort for them, maybe ... not an easy life to live). The planes were still dropping sky divers near the air field and the skate board park was filled with board enthusiasts. So much to see along the walk! This is really a nice amenity for Oceanside.…
