From Carlsbad Inn to the Oceanside Pier, the coastal rail trail makes its way along a protected stretch of roadway, some neighborhoods, and a formal, well marked trail. It's only about a 3 mile walk and there's always the train to take back if the round trip walk is too long. There are plans to extend the trail all the way to San Diego but that hasn't come to fruition at this time. Sometimes the wheels of progress turn slowly. Walking this trail and its environs really gives a good opportunity to stop and admire flowers, appreciate some of the local flavor, and create memories.…

We walk from Oceanside to Carlsbad on this trail. It's a nice, flat, paved surface that parallels the train tracks a good bit of the way (but not all of it). It also safely allows pedestrains and bikers to ride next to the road and through the ecological preserve as it approaches the turn-about at the entry to Carlsbad. From the Strand, our walk was about 6 miles long round trip. It was a perfect way to see the sights, enjoy being outside, and get a little exercise. I can't wait until this Coastal Rail Trail is completed uninterrupted from Oceanside to San Diego. This small portion of the trail is well maintained and perfect for jogger and bike enthusiasts of all levels.

this bike path gets you off the highway, and although there is nothing special about riding along train tracks, at least its safe and not across the highway. from there it turns west and follows the shoreline route (on the roads of course)
