People shoot down Oakland, but did you know she had the first bird sanctuary in America? Did you know our lake is the largest salt water lake in all of America? You can rent boats, take sailing lessons (check out the summer sailing classes for...More

We walked off a few off the dinner calories by touring the gardens at lake Merritt. Easy to find, free parking a little difficult or very easy paid parking along the lake front. The garden encompasses several styles, including the fabulous Bonsai garden, the Japanese...More

The walk around Lake Merritt is very level, a rise/fall of < 3 metres around. It takes about 1 hour if you just walk non stop, but if you take time to look at the different architecture plus reflect on the views and activities in/on...More

Great on a cold, hot, wet or dry day! Lovely views and about 3-4 miles around in total. I recommend heading counter clockwise.

If you’re in Oakland for a nice walk or run this is the place, some trail is under construction end of December. Trail all around the lake over 3 miles.

Walk around Lake Merritt for a stroll or a jog to get away from the hectic city life. Birds and ducks abound. It's in downtown Oakland and a nice escape for a nature walk or a little excercise.

Lake Merritt is a bright spot in the urban sprawl of Oakland, a welcome swath of green in a concrete landscape. There are always lots of little children laughing in the playground, chasing the geese, checking out the small naturalist museum. The neighborhoods that surround...More

Lighted 3.1 mile path around the lake. The path is mostly paved but not always smooth and a few parts are unpaved. Lots of others out there but it's Oakland so be careful. There are also two boat houses for rowing and it appeared other...More
