We joined a very knowledgeable Oakland Parks and Rec naturalist for an hour long walk along the shore of the lake to identify some of the various fall migratory birds in residence. If there is a "walk" available, we recommend taking it.

This lake is the quintessential urban running/walking experience. The distance around the perimeter is perfect for either beginner's routine or laps for a more seasoned person. The environment is always interesting and varies from side to side. It is highly recommended for a run, a walk, or any other type of leisure activity that gets you out and about.

Lake Merritt is the gem of the Oakland urban community. The lake is a tidal lagoon with a 3.4 mile heart shaped perimeter and can arguably be called the heart of the city. A rare jewel in a small city of Oakland where you can find sword range of excellent restaurant and Bar. Around the lake you will see people coming out for a walk or run after work or family hanging out. Come and visit.

Lake Merritt is an amazing thing to have right in the middle of a metropolitan area like Oakland. We are so fortunate to have a beautiful and serene place to stroll, run, hike, bicycle or even just sit. Especially in the days to come (post 2016 election), it will provide a much needed respite to our daily stresses.

It's a jewel in Oakland. Many people just enjoying the outdoors and walking, running, biking around the lake. On Saturday's there is a terrific farmer's market. Get yourself some lunch.

The lake is suitable for walk or boating during a sunny day. The waterfront has some interesting buildings.

Whether you go on a brisk morning walk or take an end-of-day stroll in the evening, you'll find Lake Merritt refreshing and relaxing at the same time. At times (late morning and early evening, weekends) it feels a bit crowded with a few joggers, dog-walkers, etc., but that too seems pleasant. You can enjoy watching gondolas pass by (or get...
