California's first showcave has been conducting guided tours since 1850. Today, visitors are taken on 60-80 minute "Trail of Lights" tours of the intricate and beautiful rock formations made of marble, calcite, aragonite and gypsum. For the more adventurous, three and five hour challenging caving expeditions can be reserved, exploring the inner reaches of the cave. Comprehensive school program available. Above ground activities include gemstone mining, free nature trail, picnic tables, volleyball court.

We love caverns and this one was excellent. There are 10 or more rooms. Its quite muddy underfoot and some of the entrances are quite a squeeze, even on the "tourist" route. The young guide, Jacob, was very enthusiastic. And when they offer you a...More

We visited the caves in June, before the "floods" receded. Even so, we spent a very long time inside the caves. When they offer helmets, take the helmet. Not a cave for tall people or the timid. There weren't lots of stairs, but the floor...More

This cave was used in the gold rush days for weddings and various other things. A good way to spend some time on a hot day.

My husband and I toured California Cavern in September, 2016. It is located near Angel's Camp in California Gold Country. We really lucked out and were the only 2 people on the tour! Our guide was young and a bit awkward in places, but she...More

Excellent staff, facilities, etc. but I only rated it a 3-star because this just wasn't my idea of fun. It's worthy of a 5-star only if you like this kind of stuff. Prepare to get muddy a little bit from the knees down to your...More

Of all the nearby caverns, this one is without question the most qualified to claim an ADVENTURE tour. They have a short and easy basic tour, a longer mid-level tour and a challenging extended Deep-Earth tour that even includes quite a bit of water during...More

This was unexpectedly a great adventure. We grandparents are somewhat limited physically and were thrilled that we made it thru the tunnels. The caverns were beautiful and guide was excellent.

This is a fun and historic place to visit. Unfortunately the Butte Fire, which is still burning, has burned down the entire town of Cave City. There is nothing left there except for the caverns.

This is not as great a cavern as those like Kartechner Caverns or Luray Cavern, to name a couple of the magificent ones, but with this tour you get a good dose of Gold Rush history. For that reason, I would recommend this cavern. The...More
