It’s strange how this one artist Hiroshi Senju has a museum dedicated solely to displaying his work, especially since he is pretty contemporary and his work isn’t so prolific or even that interesting, but this museum is unique with its undulating floor and purity of...More

As fans of Pritzker prize winning SANAA we were pleasantly surprised to find this museum in Karuizawa. We discovered it was here when we picked up a flyer at the shinkansen station with coupons to several museums in the area. The coupon was for 100...More

This museum is worth a visit just to see the building in which it is housed. The single-story structure is an extraordinary work, but for some bizarre reason, photographs inside are prohibited. The art collection is quite mundane, mostly with bland landscape works. The highlight...More

The Fall Room of the museum is worth the visit. They use a big painting as a screen. Wonderful. Parts of Senjus work are really interesting, other parts match illustrations to children's books. The museum itself is very interesting with gardens build "in" the museum.

One of my favorite art museums. Everything in the museum is by Hiroshi Senju. Love everything especially the Fall Room. The building itself is an art piece. So serene and blends perfectly with the landscape. An amazing museum and is a must when in Karuizawa.

I did not know this famous Japanese painter. His themes are waterfalls and deers. The museum building is unique and quite interesting. (No photos inside)

The Hiroshi Senju Museum, designed by Ryue Nishizawa (西沢立衛), is unquestionably one of the most captivating pieces of architecture I have had the privilege to see with my own eyes. The organically-shaped, curvilinear light wells puncture through the roof, creating some of most exquisite indoor...More

This is a relatively small gallery but it is so imaginatively designed that the building is almost as impressive as the wonderful work on display. Don't miss the 'Fall Room.' Well worth a visit.

This art museum features of the work of one painter. It's distinctive work, too. It's abstract but natural objects like waterfalls feature throughout. The building was designed especially to house the collection and it's an art-work in itself. The garden outside is a unique collection...More
