Featured in a film, Qiao's Family Compound is filled with hundreds of rooms and siheyuans, all with their own sections of history. Seeing the types of punishments people would receive in those days-the actual equipment located in the palace-like compartment-, as well as the bedrooms for the concubines, and decent information on their religions and education, was pretty incredible and... I really enjoyed the Qiao Family Compound. Whether it was the relative emptiness, the blue sky or the very informative information provided about the rooms and the family and how daily life in the Compound operated, I just found the whole thing fascinating. The furniture installations from the bedrooms to the kitchen are terrific. I particularly liked the medicine cabinet.... More

This place was a highlight of our visit to Pingyao. My husband knew that it was the location for the film Raise the Red Lantern and as such was an authentic place to visit. As the location is on the outskirts of town, we hired a driver to take us from Taoyuan Airport to this place and then on to... More

What an amazing place, great insight on how some of the wealthy lived. Give yourself plenty of time when visiitng, as it can get a bit "crowded".

Red lanterns adorned the Qiao's Big houses everywhere. Well preserved. Now used as a scene for several Chinese movies.

The compaound is not too big. One can get an idea of the past way of fliving there, even by visiting only the old parts. it is a nice place to visit, if one happens to be around the area.

To begin with, I watched the movie "Raise the Red Lantern" which was filmed in this compound and then I kind of got a whole different understanding of why this place is so interesting. The movie summary is this: "China in the 1920's. After her father's death, nineteen year old Songlian is forced to marry Chen Zuoqian, the lord of... More

I am impress with the house of qiao. This house used to belong to a very successful shanXI merchant . We paid 80 rmb for a guide. It was worth it. She told us the history of this family and the reasons for the furniture in the rooms and their way of life. We saw the 2 beautiful lantarns given... More

Our fantastic tour guide Jonathan Zhang took us to see this and we found the family compound really interesting and quite magnificent. My wife and I really enjoyed this and having Jonathan there to tell us the what and the why, really made our visit here so much better. We purchased two items from here and we will have great... Being a fan of the film Raise the Red Lantern, I was particularly interested to visit this compound. Our guide advised that a new part was built for the film. We visited the original compound and saw rooms and courtyards inhabited by generations of the Qiao family complete with red lanterns. On the way out, there are many small stalls... More
