Peaceful Spot for Walking and Bird-Watching
May 2019
We were in town on vacation and visited the refuge for a morning walk. This is a reclaimed water management site (no odor) with several large ponds that attract birds and wildlife. The ponds are surrounded by over 10 miles of trails (some are dirt roads, really) with a hard-packed surface. The Sea and Sage Chapter of Audubon operates a small visitor center at the entrance with a library and gift shop. The woman working there was very pleasant and helpful. She gave us a map of the reserve (also available online). We spent about 90 minutes walking the loop trails (about 2.5 miles) and saw wildflowers and many birds, particularly waterfowl. The trails were mostly level and firm enough to roll a wheelchair on, though I wouldn't recommend it in wet weather. Benches are provided for resting. The vegetation around the ponds has grown up very high so it was frustrating that we couldn't see over or through it except in certain locations. There weren't very many people there on a Tuesday and it was peaceful and relaxing. Restrooms are provided but the two in the back of the park are portable toilets so I recommend using the one at the entrance before you head out. Note that dogs and bicycles aren't allowed in the reserve.

Unpleasant surprise
Jan 2020
My husband and were all excited to visit the Wildlife
sanctuary. Unfortunately we did not get any further than a little past the entrance.
It was in the midst of the day around 2:15 pm on Thursday Jan 2, 2020.
We noticed that there were not many cars and only men. The men in front of us, kept on looking behind and gave us a strange look. When we saw a man without his shirt and socializing with another man, we got the vibe and left. We did not mean to intrude... Maybe we were at the right place at the wrong time...

Highly recommend

This place is still a hidden secret. Thousands of cars pass by each day and I am sure the majority don't even know about it. I used to live across the street and go running here. Highly recommend!

Nice and easy trails

Nice area to walk or exercise in open air. Several trails are available for all kind of activities in a green area. However don’t really agree with the wildlife... you can see some birds and ducks but all is artificial and not sure you’ll see nice wildlife.

Finally made my first visit, and guess what, I liked it. Mostly easy flat walks along different trails. I suppose one could get lost within this area. Just knowing west and east helps you to figure it all out quickly enough. I mean it is large enough to walk and never see another soul, during an hour or so. And since I do not carry a cell phone, that might mean I should not walk alone. I had always speculated what this area was like, somewhat different than I expected. It is kept clean, does not smell, a few buildings on the site. And volunteers are there during the hours they post as being open. I saw mostly birds, not any land animals, and very few humans. I will continue to drive by and walk through this open space as buildings creep ever closer.

Difficult to find but worth it.

Don't get disappointed at first view. You need to find the trails and then you'll be amazed by the humming birds and sea birds. The trails are winding and circular and it's easy to get lost but it's an oasis in the middle of a water plant.

I run guided experiences at this wildlife sanctuary. It is accessible for all ages and abilities. Easily walkable and educational. It's great to get outdoors in the middle of suburbia. If you haven't visited yet, contact me for photography tips and experiences.

Hidden oasis...

This is a largely unimproved area near the original Irvine Ranch Water District location Irvine that can be hard to find. On site is the Audubon Society, which has a small, informative exhibit on, you guessed it, local birds. This is an interesting stop for all ages. The reserve is a serene, long, loopy walk during which you may see many species of birds, both local and migrating. However, you may also see very few birds, as this is a natural preserve rather than a zoo. I find that just the walk is a quiet, soothing, lovely place to jar get away from the hustle and bustle of urban life. I kind hate to talk about it, because I’d like to keep it a well known local secret.

Easy nature walk

You'll see lots and lots of birds here at this reservoir. There are 6 different ponds and each has some benches placed around them. We saw some white pelicans, coots, ducks, gulls and even an osprey!
