I went on a magical trip to Levi via Santa’s Lapland (Inghams) and we booked to go on a husky and reindeer experience.
The first part of the trip seemed well thought out, the reindeer farmers explained how the reindeer live wild for the majority of the year and so we needed to be calm and respectful when around them. They seemed well looked after and cared for.
On the same plot of land, and after the reindeer ride, we ventured on foot for about 5 minutes to another area to have a husky ride.
Myself and other guests were absolutely distraught and disgusted at how the dogs were being treated.
We were told by the guides and the locals that the dogs are all very hyper and run around and bark and howl; but it is because they are desperate to get out and run and join in the ride. That they are all happy and the jumping and barking was them showing their excitement.
I can honestly say, it reduced me to tears.
There was over 100 dogs. About 2 per cage. Each cage has a small wooden box on the centre with a hole for them to sleep in. The dogs were spinning. They were very stressed and psychologically damaged.
How do I know this? Well, as a family who have rescued dogs and family have rescued frogs back In England; we have visited shelters before and seen this type of stressed behaviour before.
The guides and staff tried to reassure me and some others they were very happy but it was very obvious this was an act of cruelty and those dogs were starved of any form of freedom.
I challenged the staff and asked if those dogs were allowed sevenths walks each day, had space outdoors to run or if they just pulled a sleigh and then got put back in a cage for the remainder of the day - every day.
Apparently that is their life. And again I was told they are happy.
Myself and some others refused to go on the ride.
One dog, which was just heartbreaking to watch, was spinning around in circles and running loops in his cage with his tongue drooped. No water no bedding - just a cage. His eyes were as though they were dead.
It was quite simply cruel and unnecessary.
Please avoid this activity. If you pay into it then you pay towards the severe mistreatment of these beautiful animals.
I was also shocked that the English staff went along with it. All money making. So utterly heartbreaking.

Amidst throngs of icy pine trees and frozen brooks, we reached Levi Husky Park. Even though many destinations are offering husky safaris on Lapland, I specially picked out this one as the ambience here exactly resembles what I have dreamt of. Also, when 3-4 huskies pull the sledge in all other places, around 10 huskies are allotted for each sledge here. The tour was booked beforehand from Levi Information Center. It is 60 EUR per head for every 2 km. We were about 10 minutes late when we reached the spot. By then, a tour before the safari had already begun. It was a group of 20 including children. To welcome all the visitors, a cute Pomeranian dog accompanied the guide constantly wagging its tail.

Here, a Chapter from Siberian Huskies, there were 4 wolves and 1 Arctic fox. Their blue or multi-coloured eyes and striking facial masks only add to the appeal of this breed. There were more than 30 of those athletic and intelligent breed of dogs with Siberian’s wolf-like looks. On the way, a white reindeer with quite a friendly air and long antlers greeted us. Reindeer is a wild animal. But it was fascinating to see how well it was tamed. There were many kissing and hugging it and taking clicking photographs. However, I had no time for that. My sledge with mighty huskies was ready. They were damn energetic and hyperactive that the sledge was fastened strong with an anchor. One can accommodate two.

We were all set with our cameras. They removed the anchor and blew a whistle and yelled ‘Hoy Hoy’. Phewwww!! It was incredible! Far beyond my expectations! The Huskies ran forth as if they were galloping! Most of them were barking loud during the safari. Our dogs reached close to the one in front due to over-speed. So, our driver stopped the sledge for two minutes. The temperature was below -25 degrees. Even though we were provided with blankets to cover our legs, it was biting cold.

It was as if in a magical world, that we realised our frozen state only when we actually came to a halt. We really wanted to go once again. However, due to time constraints, we had to abandon that idea. But, I must say, even though I have embarked on many journeys before, an experience of this sort was indeed a one-piece.

Fantastic attraction. Definitely a must see in Levi. It was amazing meeting the fun Siberian Huskies who adore the sledge pulling sport. They were soo keen to join the pack pulling the sledge. It made my day seeing how much fun they have with it. Being on the sledge run was also super fun and exciting. Amazing experience! Also, it was awesome seeing the other animals they care for: the reindeers, the wolves, the red fox and the artic fox. Knowledgable and friendly guide. Afterwards I even watched a movie she recommended… Togo… which the star was one of their dogs. The tour finishes in an adorable wooden cabin where they serve a nice hot berries drink. The cabin is very well decorated with a lovely open fire in the middle, absolutely adorable.

Went here on 15th December 2021 with my family of 6. 3 adults and 3 children and everyone had an amazing time, the husky ride and seeing all the other animals was exciting and interesting. The lady guide who lived there was brilliant and had exceptional knowledge and got the whole group involved.
We booked direct through there website as TUI had no availability or very limited availability and was also nearly double the price off going direct
Would certainly recommend this when in Levi with kids

A charming experience! We came as a family: 2 parents, a 10 year old, a 7 year old. They told us all about the dogs, showed us lots of different dogs and even a couple of foxes. The 2km ride was smooth and quick.

We simply turned up and they let us into a tour group without the slightest concern/issue. There were 75 dogs in total - quite a pack. The guide took us around and talked us though the various pens; all culminating in a sled ride. Great fun, really nice guides & interesting. Thoroughly recommended.
P.S. whilst the guides kept on reminding the parents not to let their children put fingers into certain cages (the dogs are not yet trained), it was staggering how many ignored this. Hopefully Finnish H&S law will mean that the parents are told they are to blame.......

This little gem of a park is 15 mins outside of Levi. We went as part of a Tui holiday to Lapland and paid extra for this excursion. It was approx €135 per adult and €100
Per child so not cheap! We were greeted by the park and our group were split into two, allowing the families of 4 to experience the husky sleigh ride first. As a family of three we went next and experienced the most magical and enchanted ride through white snow filled forest and over a frozen lake. The area is beautiful. The dogs are so clever and it’s so special to have had the privilege of being pulled by them.

Once back to the park, we were introduced to Tiger, the kissing reindeer. A film star in his own right, Tiger likes to eat gingerbread and if you put it in your mouth he will gently take it from you like a big kiss. It was truly wonderful to be so close with such a majestic animal. Simply beautiful and the highlight of my whole holiday. We kissed at least 5 times but don’t tell the husband!

The reindeers are all let out of their enclosures every night to roam the woodland and come back each day for food and to be looked after. Animal welfare is top of their priorities here, which is clear from the number of rescue animals they had. Arctic and Red foxes as well as wolf dogs.

The husky’s are fantastic and are also allowed to run in the woods (different part to the reindeer) and while we were there we were lucky to see the husky pups which were as cute as you would imagine.

We ended the tour (2 hours) with warm juice and sausages in the hut over open fire. The hosts are chatty, friendly and very knowledgable.

It’s not a big park, small and has a family feel to it. I loved it. Worth the time and money just to kiss a reindeer! How many people can say they’ve done that?

Excellent trip we booked through the Levi tourist office I wouldn’t recommend booking through a UK tour operator as they triple the prices. Dogs appear well looked after and they also have a couple of reindeer and some arctic foxes. The staff were brilliant they all spoke really good English and were really informative. The husky ride was lovely through the forest and up around a frozen lake. My only criticism is that it was a little rushed I would have liked to have a little more time however this might have been due to the fact our bus was half an hour late

This place is a hidden gem in Levi. Please book in advance, and arrive on time because they are popular. Place was well kept, guide dogs are cute and sledge fast. We took 4 km tour and it was fun. For children under 3 years might be ok 2 km?

Thank you Pinja for good tour. Learned lot about dog life. Dogs are super friendly❤️
