Truly interesting

Have been a fan of this winery for some time so was keen to come and try directly at their location. The visit needs to be reserved well in advance and they will give you the indications of how to arrive. We spent approx 2 hours together in a group of 7 guests viewing the vines, farmhouse and barrels. I learnt quite a bit of how their wines are changing (e.g. removing the older "Breg" labels, and now focusing more on Ribolla). We finished by trying 4 of their wines: 2 ribolla, 1 pinot grigio and 1 Rujno. We bought one bottle back home with us. EUR50 is quite steep for a regular wine visit, but given our interest we were happy with his

The taste of snake oil

Gravner makes a macerated Ribolla Gialla (referred to as an "orange wine" by the entire world except the people at Gravner) that is well-made. In fact, the two-hour fifteen-minute tour (made especially lengthy if two latecomers who have apparently never drank wine before ask a dumb question every two seconds) will walk you through the entire process, from staring at the grape clusters in the vineyard to walking among the buried amphorae in which the wine is initially aged, to viewing the barrels, to examining the label machine, to washing a tasting tool, etc. etc.

At the end, for no less than EUR50 per person, you will taste no more than a splash of three of such wines, served in an unwieldy, unattractive stemless glass made specially for the winery (itself warranting a ten-minute explanation). These insignificant splashes of wine (served at room temperature, as warrants another long explanation) confirm, yes, that Gravner is elite among its style of wine. They also confirm what should be by-then-obvious - that you are paying quite a lot for a label and a kooky style of winemaking, rather than a product that is actually worth EUR53+ per bottle (that's right, the least-expensive wine they sell is EUR53). Certainly, the fact that you've paid almost the full retail price of a bottle of wine to wander through an excruciating two-hour tasting confirms that either you are a rich (in both free time and money) idiot, or that you've been snookered.

I'm all for unique winemaking styles, and certainly for pride in one's product. I've visited wineries that meet those criteria around the world, including in and around Brda and Friulia. The principle distinctions between Gravner and those other places was not the extraordinariness of the wine, but the price and length of the tour, the arrogance with which it was delivered, and the audacity of the bottle prices at the end. Best of luck to these folks -- they seem to keep getting people to pay what they are asking, but how they do that is truly a mystery.

Hi Jlb3, thank you for your review. I'm sorry you did't appreciate the visit, I thought the information we sent you prior to the visit were clear: you were not the only person to visit, we were going to visit the vineyards, the cellar and taste 3 wines. No snacks, no one-on-one visits, neither how wine-educated other visitors on the visit could be (we actually like having people over who are interested in learning about wine, no matter how foreign to the business) were mentioned. For future reference, we will make sure our visitors know our visits do not include complimentary meals, one-on-one time with us, and that a tasting glass is usually not filled to the brink with wine. About the price: you were informed about what the price would get you in terms of visit and time, and were free not to accept. Being a highly educated wine consumer (unlike some of our visitors, as you specified), we assumed you were aware of the prices of our wines. My apologizes if I wasn’t able to make you understand the high cost of production we have, but it seems like you know many other producers bottling wines after 7 years, offering visits with lunch or dinners for free and selling wines for max 10€. I apologize if the visit was too lengthy, at the time we were not aware of your other commitments for the day. Simply letting us know you were short on time would have been enough to make us speed up the process. Ultimately, we thank you for this highly educational visit. We will continue offering them to people regardless of their knowledge of wine, as it seems like the more polite and interested people are often the ones who show up with an open mind and appreciate the time and care we put into the hospitality we can offer. Nice winery

We visited Gravner with a bunch of friends on a Saturday morning. Yes the daughter of Josko (the founder) is pretty smart and well spoken; she can really explain and transmit the family passion into winemaking. The taste session at the end is a bit short compared to other similar winery visit, and also they do not offer snacks as other do. Not a bit problem but food usually helps the empty stomach absorbing the wine.
Have to say that their wines are pretty expensive (+50 euro), and I found them not so easy to drink. Overall a nice and educational visit, not so much for a wine buying.
