The butterflies, once so plentiful are reduced to just a few. Our 7-year drought has damaged many of the eucalyptus trees, some of which will have to be taken out. The City of Goleta and various residents are arguing now about how many and how...More

Monarchs only eat milkweed so their numbers have been decimated by Monsanto. Down 90% in 20 years, nearing extinction. If you want to see them, come soon, between November and January. They used to cover the eucalyptus trees and still hang in "strings" on trees...More

We weren't blessed by an abundance of monarchs on our visit, but the nearby cliffs and beach make this a wonder stop regardless. We saw dolphins playing in the surf and three huge condors soaring overhead. It's a fair bit of walking, but not overwhelming....More

We missed the 1000's of butterflies by 2 days... but the hundreds that remained made it exciting just the same! The walk is about 3.5 miles round trip depending where you entered the wilderness area from... Be sure to walk beyond the butterfly nesting area,...More

Those who were here in the 1980's remember the trees covered with life. Now a remnant returns but may not persist. Before the eucalyptus trees were introduced they were not here and now milkweed is disappearing. Still not to be missed.
