Visited while staying at Loews Coronado. Beach wasn’t crowded and beautiful sunset views. Public bathrooms and food/drinks available where we were.

This beautiful stretch of beach below Coronado is long, lovely, lonely, and good surf. It has facilities for families as well as surfing advocates.

Fantastic long beach to take a walk. Watch expert kite surfers, beachcomb, collect sanddollars, watch sea birds.

Silver strand is a cherished memory of being with my family. Was lucky enough to spend 3 nights in early April '19 with our travel trailer, was the midway point on a 20 day road trip. Facility was great, hosts were terrific, a little pricey but totally worth it. Weather was perfect. The sunsets and sand dollars were plentiful, and the beach was quiet.

A great place to stay and if you can get a space in the 100 numbers, that is on the beach, makes for a wonderful stay. You are right on the beach. We parking the motorhome straight in so when inside we are looking directly at the beach and waves. Nothing obstructing the views except some people walking by. This is a Great State Beach with Electric and water. That is not normal for the local State Beaches.

Gentle surf, nice sand, restroom and lifeguard facilities. Would be perfect if the State wouldn’t be so overreaching in leaving huge mounds of seaweed on the beach for annoying insects to breed. Why not have a few seaweed free zones for flightless beachgoers to enjoy?

We stayed at the Coronado Bay Resort, right across the street is Silver Beach, they provided beach chairs & umbrellas that they set up anywhere you would like. The beach was a little dirty with a lot of seaweed on the shore. It just could of used good sweep from the city but over all we had a great time!

I was a SSSB with my family of four and another family of four. We were staying down in Imperial Beach, which was closed due to contamination from a pipe break in Mexico (not happy). So, we had to travel up the coast to find a safe beach. SSSB was just miles up the road. We were very pleased! Lifeguards on duty for long periods of time during the day. Beach was clean, restrooms very close, easy in and out parking. There is a fee to park, but we had no issue with that. The rangers were very nice and spoke to to us for a while and made us feel very welcome and safe. We spent to days at this beach and had a great time. With the military activity in the area you are sure to see ships, countless choppers/helos, hoovercrafts from nearby training grounds, etc.! Very cool to watch!

It's always an adventure visiting here. Reservations are hard to get. Need a fairer system for reservations. Too many people book the full week and then they cancel and reserve the days they actually want. The camp hosts are always rotating. The last visit, the host was very annoyed by how people were barely having their tires on the outside or on the lines and making people re-park. This is very tough because not at RV's or trailers are the same size, and the tow vehicles range in size as well. Please take this into consideration and use better judgement when it comes to making many people move they vehicles. It's a chain reaction.

I haven't visited the beach, to do actual beach stuff, in years! Now that I have a small child I was worried about all the things that could happen while we were there. The beach and water were amazing. Clean and safe, hardly any litter (what we did find we picked up). There were a lot of small shells (sorry, I know there is a name but not a beach person) that you had to walk over to get to the water. It didn't hurt but was kinda weird to step on them. We found a ton of sand dollars, different types of shells, and crabs. It was really fun. During low tide, the distance between the water and sand was super wide nice and many (young) families used that time to hang out with a little less stress.
We stayed at the state campground and it was good. We are used to wide open sites in the Eastern Sierras and here it is a parking lot. If you were lucky enough to score the beach access it is worth it. Our friends have a toy hauler and it backed straight up into the sand. The spaces are roomy if you have a decent size trailer but some fifth-wheels and motorhomes had little room to have outdoor space.
The pros of the campground:
- Clean
- Reasonably priced
- Hookups (electricity and water)
- Nice hosts (as of Summer 2019)
- Guys come in the morning and you can pay for them to empty your tank ($20 as of 2019)
- Cold showers at the end of the campground
- Bike paths lead from the campground into the town
The cons of the campground:
- Gates to the state park/campground close & lock at certain times
- Very picky on rules (we got a violation for water dripping but wasn't charge)
- Inner and back rows have smaller space and have to walk through other campers
to get to the beach
- I have heard you need to lock up your stuff due to the homeless (never encounter
this)
- Not close to the town, you have to drive to get there
If you wanted day use the parking was $10, a bit pricey but in the early summer (June 2019) the beach was so quiet it is worth it. The other side of Coronado the beaches are so packed I would happily pay $10 for this.
All-in-all, a very nice experience for us and would do it again in a heartbeat (as long as we get the beach row - hard to get).

Is there any way around getting stuck inside when they close the gates at 7??

You may park your vehicle outside the park on Coronado Cays Blvd. which is on the east side of Hwy 75 and either walk or bike in and out of the park. Gate is locked at 7, 8, or 9 depending on time of year.

The campsite says NO WIFI. My hubby needs wifi access to make this trip happen... Any experience with laptop access from RV sites or on the beach itself? Thanks!

I as well don't know about WiFI access, we just used our cell phones on 4G LTE while there and sent several texts and pictures to others. I would imagine that if 4G LTE is available that you could get a jet pack that generates a WiFi signal to be able to connect your other devices with. We travel frequently with a jet pack that we use on our Verizon 4G LTE and it works really well, we are able to connect 5 devices to the jet pack WiFi. Ours is a couple of years old now and I hear the newer ones work even better. I also know you can rent jet packs (or other devices that generate a WiFi signal) for about $10 a day from various companies and I've heard those work out good too. You're right close to the city there while on the beach so I don't see this as any problem to get a WiFi signal generated from another device, it'll likely just end up costing you a few dollars a day to do so.

Are the RV's secluded to just a portion of the beach? I am staying w my family at the Loews and this is the beach we will use. Don't want to see a bunch of RV's when I am trying to just relax and enjoy the ocean.

So there are a lot of rvs, however there is a sand hill and once you go over the hill all you see is the ocean and no rvs. I highly recommend going to Coronado beach. Just up the road. You will NOT regret it. Justbto swim etc.
is shell collecting currently allowed at this beach? I have loved collecting shells for many years and I'm know visiting this beach.
Thanks!

I don't believe they have full hook-up, just electric and water but they do have a dump.
