Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

If you are a Bolinas resident, " a Bolini" then you know this place. Bolini's tend to congregate here to talk about town politics, the days catch, or their next project. Many join in the local pool tournaments and enjoy some of the local and soon to be famous bands, who play here on the weekends, and in summer most nights. If you really want to see the real heart and soul of Bolinas, just come here and hang out.

Cool, retro, hippy kinda bar. Full of locals, managed to find Bolinas and was suprised with how mellow and awesome it was. Everyone is really friendly in Smileys and they had a vast selection of locally brewed beers on offer!

Bolinas is a small town with incredible charm. Although most residents would rather not see tourisim you will be treeted well there. Smileys is an old building (1850's). It is a step back in time with great bartenders and patrons. The hotel is a lot of fun if you don't mind the lack of phone or TV. Smileys is a great place to get away from it all. I'll be back many more times.

So we knew going in that sleeping at Smiley's might be a challenge. We were happy just to be able to get a place in town so that we could surf all day and not have to drive anywhere. One thing to know is that the rooms are set back from the bar a bit and feel pretty safe, which is good. The bathroom was fine -- the shower was hot and everything. The big downside was the overwhelming musty smell. It made it tough to sleep, even with the window open. Of course, it was also hard to sleep because of the band playing late into the night at the bar.

The carpet was clearly pink early in life, as evidenced by the corner behind the door, but is now overwhelmingly a solidly brown shade. Basically, a pretty sketchy place to sleep, but OK if you just need a roof and a shower.

We spent a long spring weekend in Bolinas at Smileys. I loved the place. It is a funky surf motel. There is no phone or tv in the room. The furniture was old and the floor had some wierd stains and the shower was pretty bad. But it's a funky surf motel attached to a bar, and it's super cheap! If you want a nicer cleaner place to stay- go to the Blue Heron up the street. There is a great restaurant across the street- the Coast Cafe. Everyone is really friendly all through the town. The beach is within walking distance, and the bar is right there at the hotel! Definitely stay here if you want to see some local color.
