Just beside the Simon’s Town Museum is the South African Naval Museum. A large and well maintained and curated museum that highlights the country’s maritime and naval history and the evolution of the technology in the field over the decades. The exhibit pieces are well kept and in mint condition, and the photographs are well captioned and eye catching. All... More

The museum has been updated since our last visit. The recent upgrades are excellent providing an update on recent changes and some modern input. The physical exhibits outside the museum were really interesting some old radar scanners and pedestal directors were nice to see and touch. It was also interesting to see the historical photographs which document some of the... More

Very interesting museum with many exhibits that take you back to the British Navy war time history in Simonstown. We learnt a lot from knowledgeable staff and the individual exhibits were very informative. We spent a good two hours seeing everything

During our visit to Cape Town, my wife and I saw this museum on our drive through Simon’s Town and decided to stop in and visit. We were pleasantly surprised to see that the admission was free (donations accepted and appreciated). Before even entering the building, there are several displays of machinery and weapons located outside of the building; this... More

This Museum, is seriously under rated. Spent an hour here, and thoroughly enjoyed it. We visited on a Sunday, when there we no tours been offered, however we had the leisure of walking through at our own pace. The staff that where there, were extremely informative, and very helpful. Definitely worth a visit.

What a fantastic place, especially for a family. Collections of ship models and parapaanallia for sure. But also wonderful examples of working naval guns, anti-aircraft weapons, anti-submarine depth charges and defenses, a helicopter, a working model of a ship's bridge, all sorts of things. Really put the idea of a working ship and its equipment right at your fingertips. Highly... More

Great museum, good upkeep, very interesting and absolutely free. The staff was eager to help, had a quick chat and learned a lot. Though there were little errors here and there, the museum was a great visit. Well done to the Navy.

We went to the museum with our three boys aged 8, 6 and 3. Some of the museum is geared towards adults but they loved looking at the boat replicas and submarines. The best came near the end when you can go inside a submarine replica. The boys loved it! They pretended to bomb and sink imaginary ships while sending... More

Exhibitions feels like it has not been updated the last 20 years or so. Still interesting & I'm sure that if this is your area of interest, you will find countless gems hidden here.

I happened across the museum whilst driving in Simon's Town whilst a was blissfully unaware of its existence. The museum has many interesting displays that one cannot list them all. But of the exhibits that I found note worthy were: An anti submarine helicopter - in pristine condition. Replica of the inside of an old sub. Some original Dutch East... More
