Among 1000 temples in Bagan two will serve for your orientation. The largest one - Dhammayangyi and this one, Thatbyinnyu - the tallest one. Thatbyinnyu is a remarkable white sandstone temple. It has two main entrances, one from the main road which requires some walking...More

Described by the local as the tallest temple in Bagan. This is not planned in our itinerary but the building is very eyes catching from a far and thus we happen to be there. The carpark is outside and you will need to walk a...More

This temple is visible from a great distance, being the tallest in Baganat over 200 feet. It was the first temple to be built in the two-storey 'hollow' style

Outside it looks big and boring, even tatty black and white. Inside is another story with loads of golden buddhas.

At 201 feet, Thatbyinnyu is the tallest temple in Bagan, however nothing in particular stood out for me about this temple, and I preferred Gawdawpalin. I counted 20 Buddhas inside, but it felt smaller than Gawdawpalin, which only had 10. It was also far busier...More

The 12th Century Thatbyinnyu temple is one of the tallest temples in Bagan. At sixty metres high it towers high above other monuments, is visible from much of the Bagan plains area.

A cool site. One of the largest temples in Bagan; consequently, with a higher number of visitors. Easy to find among the temples.

This temple is not aesthetically pleasing from the outside, resembling a chunky western cathedral rather than a typical Bhuddist building. The building's colour is a somewhat foreboding black and white. The large number of Bhudda figures inside remind you that you are indeed in a...More

Not as aesthetically pleasing compared to Htilominlo, Ananda or Sulamani. Inside makes for an easier walking because it is laid with tiles, giving the impression you are inside a Catholic convent while the Buddhas will remind that you are still in a Buddhist temple. My...More

One of the stunning temples in the Bagan area with lots of small Buddha figures inside. It is the highest temple in that area and just amazing.
