You go to Mafia Island to dive - this means visiting the marine park, for which you will have to pay $23 per day before you even get in the water. The reefs are very healthy with lots of marine life. The park authorities are having difficulty policing the park to prevent illegal fishing, but you are unlikely to notice... More

To enter to Marine Park you must pay 24 usd / day, even you stay at a hotel over there or participate to one of the excursions. Amount paid as entrance fee is not spent to improve living standards of local people, or not used to protect the environment. Just a sum paid fo Tanzanian government r budget deficits .... More

Superb marine life, unbleached corals, intense colours, interesting species and much to be seen at less than 20m depth. However no dropoffs within easy reach, no big fish within lagoon, & tidal murk might be a problem at spring tides. Saw lionfish, clownfish (different from other type i'd seen in south and east asia), flourescent bluetipped staghorn coral, psychedlic pinky-orange... More

Worth the marine park fee for the beautiful coral and fish! You need a lodge to take you out on the water - we used Big Blu who were super.

Lovely place to be a have a pleasant walk in the beach or a family picnic. Great place to explore some old Kilwa buildings, including a 700 year old watering hole. Beautiful sunset.

We spent 5 nights in Pole Pole within the marine park. Amazing snorkelling and great dive centre, we don't dive but all the people we met who dived said it was amazing. We had to pay $20 per day per person entry and were told by our travel agent it was cash only - they can take cards so don't... More

Gorgeous sunset. Warm Indian Ocean Water. Snorkeling was great. Felt very Tropical and the wind kept it cool.

Chole bay is a beautiful place to stay and the pace of life is very relaxing. Visibility was poor on my dives, but still lots of beautiful fish. Despite it being a protected park the coral had suffered from bleaching and dynamite fishing, such a shame. A snorkelling boat trip and a tour of Chole Island ('flying foxes' fruit bats)... More

The Mafia marine park is a bit expensive but offers some good dive spots. Unfortunately you cannot see that the fee directly benefits the local people (I am sure it does not) but nonetheless the marine area is worth experiencing. BigBlu is a nice resort to stay and dive.
