*** Alba Iulia - Alba Carolina Citadel *** A town coated by the legendary halo of the great historical events that took place within its ancient walls, Alba Iulia has deeply got into the Romanian people's mind and soul. No other Transylvanian town has gathered so many crucial meanings and symbols. With thousands and thousands of years of human existence lying behind it, Alba Iulia represents the charming mirror in which all the ethnic groups of Transylvania can discover their vigor or their traditions of yore. The heart of Alba Iulia is Alba Carolina Citadel. Alba Carolina, the most representative bastion fortress in Romania and Southeast Europe, built upon the initiative of Emperor Charles the VIth of Habsburg, under the supervision of the French-born Austrian field marshal Eugene of Savoy, is wearing its royal robe. A royal citadel, residence of the bishopric, capital of autonomous principality, and a military garrison, Alba Iulia has been during all historical periods the main political, administrative, religious, cultural, and military centre of Transylvania. We invite you to visit The Other Capital of Romania.

After being refurbished few years ago, the immense citadel of Alba Iulia is a real beautiful place. All is now clean and taken care of and most of the building inside have been also refurbished. The area next to the Union Room and Union Museum is the best and you can enjoy drinking a bear or a coffee here watching... More

Beautiful place. It's a military fortress shaped as a 7 point star. The buildings and courtyards are beautiful. Recommended.

The place is almost unknown so it may be the reason that it is not as crowded as some other places in Transilvania. The citadel really makes impression. Try a walk later in the evening - when the place is almost empty... excluding natural-size figures/sculptures of soldiers or townsmen. It is really interesting experience.

Citadel of Alba lulia is the largest citadel in Romania and it takes you back to the old times. It is so lively and fun in spring and summer. Alba lulia is famous for its star shaped citadel, which is the biggest in Romania. There are a good amount of cafes and restaurants around. There are a lot of cool... More

It looks unbelievable! It was successfully restored in the last years and the result is amazing! A special place in the hart for the Romanian People. Guard change each Saturday and Sunday evening, outdoor shows in the summer time, antique fights between Romans a Dacs. Two cathedrals: catolic and ortodox, museums, Roman Fort (castrum) and also fun: coffee shops, cold... More

The most beautiful place of Alba Iulia. The Horea Obelisc, the big walls of the stronghold and the cathedral inside makes this place magic. It is a nice place to visit.

The citadel is a very large fortress originally built by the Roman Empire. It was also the place where Romania first united in 1599. I visited it on a Monday which isn't the best because all the museums were closed as well as almost all of the food trucks. It's more of a spring/summer attraction where there might be more... More
