Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

My family and I had had a fantastic day out cycing from Mullingar recently. It was alot of fun and a lovely way to enjoy a cycle with children without the worry of dangerous roads. The only down side for me was the lack of facilities along the route. On the day we did it, there was not one shop along the route, nor a working facility to top up your water bottle. I was disappointed and think it is missing an opportunity there to get more families enjoying it but all things considered, a great day out. Just come prepared with a packed lunch, water and have a picnic along the way!

We did this trail in 2 days. Day 1 from athlone to streamstown return and day 2 was streamstown to mullingar return. We really enjoyed the trail. Nice and wide, great countryside views.

First time to bike this greenway from Mullingar to Athlone. Very flat, straight, good surface. Enjoyable journey. This route needs more places to stop for coffee, breaks, etc. One coffee shop on the route only seems to open at weekends.
Moate, midway along the trip, did not have a lot of lunch options. On return journey, we stopped at Moate Golf Club for bite to eat - would recommend - lovely staff, reasonable prices.

Completed waste of time. The website advertised 2 companies who hire out bike. The first one which looked more suitable as if advertised it’s bikes being located beside the greenway, has been out of business for a year (as I eventually found out). The other one which is over 2 km away, was closed on the day I visited. Absolute shambles.

I use this trail for doing my long runs and interval runs. When you get pass the Ballina turn off, there isn't many people on this trail. Cycles like it, and everyone is friendly when you meet them.
Only downside is what the cows leave behind and is not tidied up(but one of the joys of nature).
For about 2.5km there are some benches for those wanting to sit and rest and have something to eat.

Athlone end tended to be littered. Littering thins out in country areas.
Gates not the easiest to negotiate with bike.
Moate could have been rebuilt as an attractive cafe, bike hire, whatever. Fine building simply bricked up.
Streamstown, a nice display of horse agri machinery, odd sculpture "things" made of horse shoes. A 1916 Proclamation plaque fixed to the building for no apparent reason.
ONE water fountain encountered at Castletown (it wasn't working, come on, really?)
Surface by canal bank close to Mullingar was rippled and uneven. Less said about the town itself the better.

We had an absolutely lovely cycle on the delightful Old Rail Trail. We went from Castletown Station to Moate and back. I really can't praise the powers that be enough for developing this wonderful amenity.
Lovely views of the surrounding countryside and great to be out among the sounds of nature.
AIt is really well surfaced and is plenty wide enough to allow faster cyclists by or to allow two way travel.

Cycled from Mullingar to roughly half way. Totally off road on a great path suitable for all types of bike and for leisure cyclists to those looking to get up a head of steam
Looking forward to a return visit at some stage to leave from athlone

Is it possible to get a b&b along the Athlone Mullingar rail track or close by where they would allow the bike inside. I gather the bike is a problem. Also generally speaking, is there any Anti Social Behavior along the way.
Many Thanks

We are cycling Mullingar to Athlone greenway , we wish to stay over in Athlone and we are wondering what the closest hotel to where we would be coming off the greenway
I am planning a trip through here in June and was wondering if the path continues from Mullingar to Dublin? Thanks

Sir
You do appear to miss the point.
Athlone to Mullingar is a railway route.
Mullingar to Dublin is a canal route.
I have travelled Enfield to Dublin and the route is very rough in places with tree roots making the path difficult. Other areas there is 50mm deep mud.
I hope this helps.

Yes at Athlone and in Mullingar.
2 and a half hours comfortably with no stops. But do stop and enjoy the peace of the Irish countryside.
