Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Athlone end tended to be littered. Littering thins out in country areas.
Gates not the easiest to negotiate with bike.
Moate could have been rebuilt as an attractive cafe, bike hire, whatever. Fine building simply bricked up.
Streamstown, a nice display of horse agri machinery, odd sculpture "things" made of horse shoes. A 1916 Proclamation plaque fixed to the building for no apparent reason.
ONE water fountain encountered at Castletown (it wasn't working, come on, really?)
Surface by canal bank close to Mullingar was rippled and uneven. Less said about the town itself the better.

Completed waste of time. The website advertised 2 companies who hire out bike. The first one which looked more suitable as if advertised it’s bikes being located beside the greenway, has been out of business for a year (as I eventually found out). The other one which is over 2 km away, was closed on the day I visited. Absolute shambles.

Long walk I did from the start in Athlone to the end in Mullingar, taking in Moate, Streamstown and Castletown along the way, was 43Km and a bit extra as it stopped short of Mullingar, on the edge of the town.
Was a little boring and dull in parts, with very long stretches, but quiet enough and on the hot day I did it pleasant enough albeit tiring on the old legs.
Took me about ten hours, but was happy to have done it. Might be a good option for a run, if preparing for a future marathon!
Well kept and maintained too....

Cycled 20km of the 43km (as we had to cycle it in both directions) cycling from Athlone to beyond Moate.
I’m a pretty inexperienced cyclist (approaching 50 and only just restarted after many years) and I loved it! Amazing surface to cycle on, straight tracks, amazing signage, well preserved railway history and … not many inclines. Will be back one day to do the rest.

This is an excellent amenity. We cycled the 43km from Mullingar to Athlone, stayed over, then back the next day. The track is in great condition and has good signage. The old railway infrastructure is fun and is home to nice cafés. We need more of these Greenways.

Hired 3 tandems and a single bike from Tri&run Mullingar which is close by the Mullingar access. The bikes were all of good quality, prepared in advance for our various children ages and with really pleasant service from the staff.. We choose the route direction towards Moate. The Greenway itself has a great new wide tarmac surface with a flat ride for large parts of it.. The Council could do more for families by adding some picnic benches along route and the odd Portaloo.. All in all we had a very enjoyable day..

The Old Rail Trail is 40km of tarmac running alongside the old Athlone to Mullingar railway.
It is one of a number of new Greenways across Ireland that provides cyclists and walkers alike a safe environment to enjoy outdoor activities. Young or old can stretch the legs on a flat even surface with multiple jump on and off points along the way, making the experience as long or as short as you would like.
I cycled with my family from the Mullingar end parking in the Railway Station at a cost of €3 per day to the finish in Athlone where there is large shop, parking and bike hire facilities.
I then cycled back to Mullingar a total of 80km round trip, leaving the family in Athlone to enjoy other attractions.
There are many attractions en-route whether your rail enthusiast or not, old ralway cabins and stations at Moate and Castletown as well as the many bridges and tunnels.

Streamstown is located along the cycle track, half way between Mullingar and Athlone. Great efforts have been made to encourage people to take a pit stop, including the planting of an apple orchard, old farm machinery laid out, and a clever table and chairs made from recycled horse shoes.

Cycled from Athlone to Moate Station and back approx 25K a great leisurely cycle completely flat surface suitable for all levels, a great facility stopped for coffee at heritage park in Moate fresh scones served with a smile. The council has done a great job on the restoration of Moate Railway station there is plenty of seating ideal for a stop. The track could do with more seats but I'm sure they will be installed in time. Track starts at Garrycastle Spar Shop Athlone Exit 9 off the M6 parking at side of Spar you can also rent a bike here, also parking at Moate Railway station beside Moate golf club or Council Yard in Mullingar. Definitely worth a visit

This is a great 42km cycle. Perfect surface for all bikes as it is perfect Tarmac other than 1 kilometre which is still very good surface. It could benefit from a coffee shop and more benches along route for elderly walkers.
It's not sign posted as a green way, it's sign posted as old railway trail.
Weather was against us but it is Ireland after all. Still very enjoyable in the rain just wear the right clothes. On a clear warm day it would be great. Good track for anybody training for a triathlon or long sportive. Reading previous comments about cyclists speeding I can see this happening but the route is bullet straight and there is not reason why you can see miles ahead for upcoming walkers.
P.s everybody we passed on this raining summers days said hi or hello.....very friendly part of the world.
Suitable for all ages and all abilities as you can dip in and out of the trail.

Is it possible to get a b&b along the Athlone Mullingar rail track or close by where they would allow the bike inside. I gather the bike is a problem. Also generally speaking, is there any Anti Social Behavior along the way.
Many Thanks

We are cycling Mullingar to Athlone greenway , we wish to stay over in Athlone and we are wondering what the closest hotel to where we would be coming off the greenway

I am planning a trip through here in June and was wondering if the path continues from Mullingar to Dublin? Thanks
Written 8 May 2017
Sir
You do appear to miss the point.
Athlone to Mullingar is a railway route.
Mullingar to Dublin is a canal route.
I have travelled Enfield to Dublin and the route is very rough in places with tree roots making the path difficult. Other areas there is 50mm deep mud.
I hope this helps.
