The attraction is a sculptural memorial. Co. Roscommon was hard hit by the famine of 1840s. Of the places hard hit, Roscommon Workhouse was one of the worst. The Workhouse which still stands behind the sculpture, was built in 1843, to cater for the acute needs of the people of the area. There was a conflict between rate payers who paid for the workhouse and the non-rate-payers who needed the facilities.In December 1847 this workhouse was in £6,000 debt.The average number of occupants was 1,767 people while relief was given to 21,000in soup kitchens.
