- Lucy K1 contributionEnjoyable, immersive and interesting experienceAn amazing immersive experience. My partner and I were searching for things to do around the area and found this online. We both thoroughly enjoyed it and would recommend it to anyone. Our tour guide, Maurice, is an ex-miner and he had so many interesting facts and stories to share. My partner is a wheelchair user and was able to access the whole tour. We would definitely recommend stopping here if you’re in the local area even just to have something in the cafe or have a look at the gift shop. Also the view from here is beautiful.Visited February 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 5 February 2024
- Andy C29 contributionsGenuine insight into mining lifeWell set up for visitors and guides who actually worked the mine. Provides a genuine insight to the daily working life of miners and their families. Gerry our guide had great stories and wealth of knowledge. Friendly staff and a shout out to the chef who went out of his way to ensure our lunch was just right - thanks. Wear some sturdy footwear and sensible clothes - the mine is wet and you'll get dripped on.Visited February 2024Travelled with familyWritten 24 February 2024
- Neil CNew York City, New York10 contributionsArigna Mining Experience, it’s a MUST see!My wife and I were the only 2 guests that Gerard had on today’s Mining Experience Tour. What an amazing experience! Spending about an hour with Gerard was both fascinating and captivating, as he his life and experiences in the coal mine from 15 years of age. Anyone in the area MUST visit the mine and learn all about how private mines operated in Ireland. I’m not going to provide any spoilers, because every step with Gerald is an opportunity to listen and learn. Additionally, there is a cafe for after the tour and every member of staff we met were wonderful. Absolutely recommended 10 out of 10!!Visited April 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 24 April 2024
- donncha rDublin, Ireland2 contributionsThe Past come to lifeAn interesting and highly informative experience and a really excellent guide,Gerard, gave vivid and humour interlaced accounts of the life of a miner and the historical backdrop. It gave an idea of the difficult working conditions and the whole process involved in extracting coal and the lives of the miners generally. I recommend it and the lovely view of the surrounding area from the location, and the welcome coffee shop on site helped us on our way to explore the area further.Visited June 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 16 June 2024
- Mary G1 contributionGood Value tourVery interesting place to visit and learn what the experience of working in the mine was like from an ex miner Gerard, who is an excellent guide, very witty and informative. Fantastic view outside and very nice cafe, friendly staff, tour good value and suitable for all ages. Bring a jacket and sturdy shoes as it's cold down in mine!Visited June 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 19 June 2024
- Nick E5 contributionsIrish mining heritageA very interesting visit to one of Ireland last working coalmines which closed in 1990. The guides are ex-miners, and our guide Jimmy give a very informative story of what it was like to work the mine. It is a drift mine, and has level access that is wheelchair accessible. The tour takes about an hour. There is also a small museum and giftshop and a cafe on site, serving coffee and cakes. We enjoyed scones with latte coffee and hebal tea. There is a large carpark with wonderful views across the valley.Visited June 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 4 July 2024
- TXCtrowHouston, Texas136 contributionsMust see experienceI have toured mines in the past in the United States, this experience was much more than I expected. Our guide, Jimmy Nugent was very knowledgeable and thorough and engaging. I wanted to talk more about the topics but having recently buried my father with his mining equipment, I got hit with the feels and fought back tears the entire time. Sorry Jimmy, perhaps I should have explained. Not only do you learn about the how and why of mining, you learn about the culture and how it was shaped by the industry, and more importantly how progress changed everything. If you love to learn, you will love this experience. We found the Arigna mine without a problem, leaving was another story, as the GPS had us going in small circles. Didn't matter though because the views were spectacular from atop the mountain.Visited May 2024Travelled with familyWritten 4 July 2024
- Kathy FNashville, Tennessee1,279 contributionsA step back in history - a must visit.I will admit when I heard we were going to visit a mine I rolled my eyes and wasn’t really interested. Wow, was I wrong!! It was amazing and I found it absolutely fascinating. You first watch a video and then put on your safety hat before entering the mine. On the tour, you learn the history of Ireland’s coal mining industry and the story is told by a person who worked in the mine. The experiential tour takes you on a journey back in time where you get to see and learn about the underground working conditions of the miners and how the mine operated. As a note, bring something warm as it is cool in the mine. After the tour there is a gift shop, cafe, and clean bathrooms too. I enjoyed the tour so much I would definitely visit again and highly recommend, it’s worth the visit.Visited April 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 7 July 2024
- The eVolutionIreland19 contributionsAmazing experienceMy family and I recently visited the Arigna mining and it was a mind blowing experience. It does take you back in the gold olden days and allow you to understand how the coal works during the 18th and early 19th centuries. Our tour guide Gerard was very informative and so ready to feed your brain, he’s been extremely fantastic and I’d recommend it to everyone, a must see in LeitrimVisited July 2024Travelled with familyWritten 8 July 2024
- Maisie H2 contributionsamazing experience led by an amazing guide !this was an amazing experience and very interesting to see how the mines worked. our tour guide Gerry was fantastic and actually worked in the mines as a young boy making the tour a lot more interesting as he was able to tell his own personal stories of people he know or his own experiences. location is fabulous and we were given many opportunities to take photos and videos throughout the tour along with Gerry making sure each person had a chance of being up the top of the tour and demonstrated some of the equipment multiple times to ensure we all got a chance to see. overall would rate this experience 10/10 and would highly recommend to do if you’re in the area!Visited July 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 22 July 2024

What a wonderful experience for visitors to experience the hardship, friendship and way of life endured by the people who who lived and worked here. Brilliant guided tour by a former employee who gave his real life experiences to add to the experience. Booked in advance as tour limited to 6 people, very safe and socially distanced with excellent Covid restrictions in place. Would highly recommend.

A fascinating insight into coal mining in rural Ireland and its impact on social history. Our guide Gerry worked there until 1984 and brought the mine to life in the process of coal mining but also the sheer hard work of the boys and men who were miners. Well recommend a visit, and enjoy the lovey view with a coffee or lunch in the nice cafe.

This is one visit we will never forget. We picked a very wet day for our visit which in a strange way added to the atmosphere. Water was gushing from a stream as we entered the site.
The tour starts with a comprehensive small museum and the only weak part of the visit, a so-so video. Then the tour begins with your tour guide having actually worked in the mine before it closed.
The working conditions need to be seen to be believed. The cause was the very nature of the coal seams. They were extremely narrow.
At the tour end there is a pleasant cafe and small shop. Like us, we you will probably feel the need to spend cash supporting this superb community effort.

This is one of the best tours you will ever do. Enjoyed every min of it and found it fascinating. The history of the mines is so interesting and to see first hand the tough conditions of the mine workers. It’s so hard to believe that anybody was able to work in such confined spaces.
The people that run this mine and give the tour is what makes it though. It’s like a story telling experience in which you are immersed, it was a tour that I didn’t want to end.
I definitely want to do it again and couldn’t recommend it highly enough.
Fantastic experience that I enjoyed with three generations from Grandad to grandkids.

Had a very enjoyable family tour here yesterday. Our tour guide Gerry was great and his knowledge and experience of actually working in the mine made the tour wholly authentic. What he described was obviously a tough working environment but one he loved. Its great that this has been turned into a tourist attraction and I would highly recommend it for all ages.
Only downside was the cafe wasn't open at the time of our visit, it would have been nice so we could have enjoyed the spectacular surrounding views for longer.

We popped in to this centre on our way back from Lough Rynn Castle. Very well signposted! Very reasonable entry price of €10 per adult for a tour nearly an hour long. Tour was excellent-informative, interactive, personal, informative etc all guides were former miners here and that added a great sense of authenticity. Also our guide was very witty and made a huge effort to include all members of the group making connections to practises in other countries. The gift shop had lots of items and was not overly priced. Food was DIVINE!!! All homemade and sooo fresh! Toilets were immaculate! The tour is fully wheelchair accessible too. Really enjoyed our trip here and have been telling lots of friends to go see for themselves!

We had a wonderful time at Arigna. The tour guide who was once a miner himself gave the tour. He was very good at explaining what happened in the mines as he worked there for 9 years. He spoke from the heart and didn’t add any bells or whistles to beef it up. Covid and social distancing was taken very seriously and the numbers permitted on tour was reduced considerably to ensure everyone’s safety. A tour at Arigna is very worth while and enjoyable for all age groups. Barbara

Was an extremely interesting visit and Gerry brought the hardships that miners went through to life from his experiences of working in Arigna since his teenage years. The views of Lough Allen from the car park are spectacular on a clear day and the way the mine interior has been set up immerses you in the reality of what working in there was like. Fair play to the local community and Leader for making this project happen and I’d highly recommend a visit for people of all ages..

We really enjoyed this tour. Our guide Gerry worked in the mines, therefore he was able to give a great first -hand account of life as a miner. We would highly recommend this. Giving Arignas close proximity to Carrick-on-shannon with lots of attractions for all ages, The Arigna Minig Experience is a must do.

We really enjoyed our visit to the former mines. Our tour guide, Gerard, was a former miner and hence extremely knowledgeable about the technical side of things but also about the human stories of the many hardships and challenges the miners and their families faced. He was also very entertaining.
The tour is about forty five minutes long so it was good value for money. It would also be easily accessible for most people and there was the option of organizing a wheelchair for disabled visitors.
There is a gift shop and coffee shop with spectacular views over the mountains and the lake.

Arigna mines opens at 10 am , I’d say the first tour starts shortly after that if you go onto their website you’ll find all the info you need . It’s a must 👌
