Excellent Tour
Aug 2021
Jimmy, who had previously worked in the coal mine, gave us an excellent and very informative guided tour, which we all enjoyed. I would highly recommend a visit to the mines!

Great insight as to what went on in the coal mines of Arigna many years ago.

Great insight as to the workings of the coal mines of Arigna many years ago. Our tour guide was one of the guys who worked in the mines, when they operated as a commercial venture, so he was very knowledgeable.

Fascinating Look At An Important Part of History
Oct 2020
On a recent visit to Sligo, my partner and I decided to check out the Arigna Mining Experience, which is not so far away, in Roscommon. I came with little knowledge of mining and only a passing interest, but found the visit fascinating. Our guide was Ger, a retired miner himself, as are all the guides. Not only was his talk informative but it was clearly very personal to him and that came through and added to the impact of his talk. Mining is probably being viewed with some negativity with our growing understanding of the need for renewable energy, but we should not forget the difficult lives miners had and the contribution they made to society in their time. I can't imagine anyone paying a visit to Arigna and not coming away having learned something and having been enriched by the experience. NOTE: Ger and the entire staff were very aware of social distancing and other covid regulations throughout the tour, including when we were in tight spaces within the mine, so we felt perfectly safe taking the tour.

On my worst day I’ll still be more privileged than what these people did to make a living everyday!

Fascinating tour and insight into the world of a miner and the mines.
Gerard our tour guide and ex miner is a mindful of information, local information and in general irish history.
I think the best complement you could give any tour is when you leave you realised how utterly ignorant you were to before you arrived.
I have a new found respect for these men, appreciation and knowledge of a world I truly never had given much thought to.
I’ll never whinge about carrying a bag of coal from the boot of my car to my stove again!

Brilliant experience- a must visit

Really glad we found this place on trip advisor and visited. Arigula Mining experience is a hidden gem! The views from outside are spectacular and panorama of Roscommon. The tour is great and Gerard our guide (who used to work in the mines (along with his family)) was brilliant. It was great to get the inside scoop and insider knowledge of what life was like working in the mines. We could’ve listened to Gerard all day. The visitor centre is a fabulous building super modern and the views from the cafe are incredible too.

In one word - Fantastic!
Sep 2020
This is one visit we will never forget. We picked a very wet day for our visit which in a strange way added to the atmosphere. Water was gushing from a stream as we entered the site.
The tour starts with a comprehensive small museum and the only weak part of the visit, a so-so video. Then the tour begins with your tour guide having actually worked in the mine before it closed.
The working conditions need to be seen to be believed. The cause was the very nature of the coal seams. They were extremely narrow.
At the tour end there is a pleasant cafe and small shop. Like us, we you will probably feel the need to spend cash supporting this superb community effort.

Very enjoyable tour. Fascinating to hear about the workings and the history of the mine. Gerry was a fantastic guide and he truly made the experience outstanding. A very knowledgeable man who shared his own experiences, very likeable gentleman. Absolutely worth a visit. If you are in the area definitely go and see it!

Enthralling tour
Sep 2020
Our tour got off to a great start with the "best rhubarb crumble ever" in the cafe. Gerry was our tour guide and it certainly adds to the experience to hear what it was like to work in a mine from an authentic minor. Bring your walking boots and you can hike some of the Minors Way while you are there. Thanks to all at Arigna for a lovely afternoon.
