- Josh9 contributionsHidden GemWe stumbled across this hidden gem driving back to our AirB&B from MonteVerde. This family run business is full of the most genuine and kind people you could meet. We were given a ride through the rolling hills to the entrance of the waterfall hike. The hike is so beautiful and simplified by the steps put in over the terrain. We had a family of monkeys show us around haha. And a little hummingbird came to say hello too. The WATERFALLS are stunning!! Alejandro kept us entertained with stories and showing us through the pools where tricky spots might be to step in the water and how to walk behind the falls. It was an absolute perfect way to end our day. The sun had started to set turning everything gold and lit up on our way back. A real life jungle book experience!!!Visited February 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 16 February 2024
- CoachM27Winnipeg, Canada8 contributionsA day well spent!!My wife and I made the drive from Tronadora to La Piedra del Indio Waterfalls and it was totally worth the drive! Our host, Alejandro, was a fantastic host and guide, not just leading us down to the bottom of the incredible waterfalls but also a wealth of knowledge about the area and it's history, the various trees and other flora and the critters we encountered along the way. The views are stunning and we even saw a Bare Throated Tiger Heron nesting in a tree about 80 feet high. Once we made our way back up (after giving Alejandro a major scare when he thought I was having a heart attack!), he opened a couple of coconuts and gave us a taste of coconut water and then some of the meat of the coconut - wonderful! We then had a cold beer and hot lunch to put the perfect finishing touch on a great day. We highly recommend visiting this beautiful site and meeting Alejandro and his family, the 3rd generation of their family to settle on this land. Thanks for the great memories, Alejandro! - Virginie G4 contributionsGo for it !great horseback ride with Alejandro, he is very attentive and knows how to keep us safe even though we are real beginners in horse riding :). We were lucky enough to be alone at the waterfalls, leaving at 8am. Guaranteed sensations and superb waterfalls! magnificent landscapes, toucan, iguana, and even a duck :))) surprising, right? don't hesitate to take this tour far from the beaten track and isolated from the crowds!!! thank you very much to Alejandro and Sandra! and also to our Palomina and Luna frames. - Bryce M3 contributionsAmazing; do it!There's a reason these are all 5 star reviews. We spent a month in Costa Rica, and this was our absolute highlight. We happened upon one of their handmade signs while en route from Montezuma to Arenal, and decided to break up the drive for our young kids. We got lucky with the falls all to ourselves (but it is regardless an incredible place to experience). The hike was easy (we had a 5 year old with us that we didn't have to carry), the water refreshing, and Alejandro and his family are so welcoming and helpful. Couldn't recommend it highly enough.Hello, thank you for your nice visit and comment for our family. It is an honor to know that you had a good time. - Jo W77 contributionsAmazing experienceStopped at the owners restaurant and he told us about the rock and the waterfall. After deciding to do a self-guided visit to the waterfall, we followed the farmer on his motorbike to the start of the trail. He told us all about the ancient petraglyth and then directed us to where he had placed some handy walking sticks. We were the only ones exploring the beautiful cascades at the time and had a magical couple of hours. We drove back to the cafe to have a cool drink and to thank the owner. So glad we stopped here!Hello, greetings, thank you for visiting us, we are happy to know that you had a good time for us in this family business. - Stay5842552 contributionsBeautiful waterfalls, kind hospitality and spectacular views from a horseback! The whole experience was just so lovely with Alejandro! He drove us to the start of the waterfall trail, which we did by ourselves. Took a wonderful bath at the bottom of the waterfall. When we got back up, Alejandro was waiting for us with freshly-cut mango. Some of us then went for an amazing horseback ride over the rolling hills. And we finished it all off with a delicious home-made lunch. We were alone there and the whole experience was so relaxed and laid-back. - Alex TRaleigh, North Carolina59 contributionsBeautiful site, excellent guide!Alejandro was a great guide through our visit. Very pleasant and knowledgeable. We were the only ones there the entire time, until we were done. We had the waterfall to ourselves. The beauty was incredible. Alejandro guided us through walking through and behind the waterfall, and that was the best rush ever! The beauty and power of the water was just amazing. We could not have done it safely without him there for sure, so I am really glad we opted for the guided tour. Muchas gracias Alejandro!! Please note that the way to the waterfall is steep, so the way back is a workout, but safe with steps. May not be suited for some unfit guests. Some of us do not exercise, and it was a bit of a struggle but not a show stopper. Well worth the effort.Hello, greetings, thank you for visiting us, we are happy to know that you had a good time for us in this family business. - Len S7 contributionsAwesome hike to split the drive between Monteverde and FortunaThis is a short hike, a perfect stop on the way from Fortuna to Monteverde. About 2 hours past Fortuna, and 55 minutes before Monteverde. We read reviews prior, and felt we needed to stop. The tour was $17 ea. and Alejandro was awesome. He drove us to the start of it, and even though mentioned he’d leave us there for a self guided tour, he actually ended up coming with. Good thing he did, as he provided lots of interesting info, we shared pictures of wildlife we had seen and he has seen on his own trails - including one recently of a Puma in a tree. We saw Iguanas, and a toucan at the end, trails/food remains from monkeys but due to rain didn’t see any this time. Total hike time was probably about an hour and a half, but easily could have spent time swimming in the rapids at the bottom, taking more pictures or hiked it slower. The trails are easy to follow - and you’d be fine either doing guided tour or not guided. We left a tip at the end with him as it was enjoyable and he went out of his way to ensure all questions were answered. He owns the entire property with family and does everything himself and takes great pride in it. Definitely NOT the typical touristy attraction which we loved. My wife and I were the only two doing the trail with him. I’d highly recommend this. The waterfall was beautiful and very powerful. The day was cloudy but once in the forested area was no issue at all.Hello, greetings, thank you for visiting us, we are happy to know that you had a good time for us in this family business, it is a pleasure to have your visitWritten 22 November 2024This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited November 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 19 November 2024
- Rianna D10 contributionsPicturesque falls with a place for a refreshing dipThis is a very picturesque family run site which we came across on our drive from La Fortuna to Monteverde. We walked ourselves and the views and trail were very enjoyable. Alejandro drove us part way and explained the trail we would come across, and we sat by the water at the bottom-most part of the waterfall. We then had some drinks and Casado which was delicious.Hello, thank you for visiting us for our family, it is a pleasure that you got to know our private land and the 4 waterfalls. On a drive from Santa Elena/Monteverde to Tenorio NP we came upon the falls tour. The area is owned and farmed by many of the same extended family and one group opened their land for the public to come and view some amazing falls. Alejandro and his family built a trail down a canyon for viewing and swimming. They planted extra flowers to attract butterflies and built sturdy steps and bridges to safely trek the area. The fee to enter ensures Alejandro's family can maintain the trails and raise their family, it is fortunate for the public to be allowed to see the falls and see some ancient rock carvings.

We had one day left in the Arenal area and wanted to find a hike. We came across this waterfall hike and were so amazingly surprised at how awesome it was. This one hundred year old family farm is blessed with stunning views and gorgeous waterfalls. A very unpretentious place, not touristy at all.
Alejandro welcomed us into their shop. He was wearing a full cast on his leg but that did not keep him from smiling and engaging with us. His wife, Sandra, drove us in their truck to the head of the falls to start our hike. On our way she stopped by this ancient stone carved with petroglyphs. I was able to follow Sandra’s story even though I’m a fairly new learner to Spanish. The rock was carved by people that roamed the land 1000 years before Christ. It was such a great experience.
There were very few people at the falls that day. We felt like we had them all to ourselves. It was a kilometer walk down. There were 4 different cascades. The owners have put so much work into the stairs and railings going down the falls.
This was far better than the Mystic hanging bridges or some of the other tourist attractions in La Fortuna

On the drive from La Fortuna to Santa Elena and in a rural area saw the small family restaurant/check-in to the waterfall - and stopped on a whim. We actually passed, but backed up to enter! Very glad we did. No English spoken but with the help of Google Translate we learned the falls are on a family farm, we paid a $15 pp admission fee, and followed the owner on a motorcycle in our 4x4, to the trailhead. We stopped to see an ancient petroglyph of lava rock and then saw the iguana that lives in the tree where we started our hike - and the owner returned to the restaurant. The hike takes you down a gorge along a series of four cascading waterfalls. Each level has a pool in which you can cool off/swim. The series of falls are stunning and the setting and views dramatic. The hike out is moderate. Great way to break up the drive and see this beautiful natural feature free of crowds. Highly recommended.

Wonderful! Alejandro is a very knowledgeable host about the trees, birds, wildlife. He even can sing some of the bird and monkey calls. And pointed out lizards and birds we never would have seen. On their extensive private property and ranch, he and his dad built this steep trail with handrails and steps all alongside the waterfalls which were amazingly energizing and lovely. The coconut milk provided right out of the shell back at the top gave a much needed rest and some electrolytes. After the hike we enjoyed the lunch made by his wife.

We had such a fantastic experience at the waterfall hike. Alejandro and his wife were extremely welcoming and accommodating to our two families. Alejandro guided us down the well-kept rainforest trail to the waterfalls and swam with us in the final waterfall. He was very helpful getting us to safety by foot and truck when a thunderstorm quickly appeared as we were trekking back up the trail. A most delicious mango (the best my husband ever had) was a great way to finish our adventure. My son said this was his favorite part of our Costa Rica trip! Thank you, Alejandro, for taking such good care of us!!

Alejandro took myself and my family of 7 out on a horseback ride through the mountain to the waterfalls. We all did a lot of excursions that week including ziplining, white water rafting, hot springs and more. This horseback ride and dip in the waterfalls was by far our FAVORITE of the entire week. The horses are well groomed and behaved, and the waterfalls are breathtakingly beautiful. Alejandro was super friendly and knew a ton about the "transition forest" and the waterfall. He even guided us behind the waterfall where the water poured over us. It was so much fun! If you're staying in Arenal or Monteverde area, I highly recommend you go see Alejandro at Waterfalls la Pedira del Indio!

We stopped after seeing the round blue signs along the highway and it was the most pleasant surprise of our trip! Alejandro drove us in his truck to the trail head, which is on his family's land. He is super friendly, great with kids, and a very experienced guide, having worked in guiding in La Fortuna for several years before starting this business. He pointed out different wildlife and took us to a spectacular pool for swimming at the base of the waterfall. He took the kids (17, 10, 8) and my husband behind the waterfall. Patient, kind, and clearly loving the land and sharing it with people, Alejandro is an absolutely wonderful host.
There is also a large volcanic rock with millennia-old carvings made by the Indigenous people of this place.
The hike is not long (~700m total) but does involve a climb, but it's not extreme. Our kids scampered along really easily. Alejandro provides nice walking sticks.
Excellent value, lovely family-run independent business. Highly, highly recommend.

What a great experience with Alejandro, he made us so welcome and spent probably far too much time with us than planned. The scenery, the open backed truck ride, the quietness of the surrounding countryside and above all Alejandro's knowledge and friendliness was outstanding. Our kids were skeptical about the tour at first based on our only ever previous experience on horses but they simply raved about this day since (20,16 and 13). the waterfall is such a spectacle and as long as you are prepared to walk back up to the top you can't fail to be impressed. This one i can wholeheartedly recommend to others. We had a lovely lunch afterwards too to keep us all going until we got to our next destination later that day so all in all a great day out. You won't regret it.

One of those serendipitous adventures that becomes the highlight of a vacation...We stumbled upon the waterfalls on our drive from La Fortuna to Monteverde and were warmly welcomed by Alejandro, who is building his dream business on his family's farm. He and his father have built a trail through the rain forest to a magnificent waterfall, where you can swim and see gorgeous foliage, iguanas, butterflies, and even monkeys! Alejandro had wonderful stories about growing up without electricity on the property, and was super well-informed about flora and fauna, as well as the archeological finding on the road to the falls. We didn't eat at the little restaurant, but in retrospect, maybe we should have...

This was a very nice experience. From the entrance, the lady took us to the site by driving in front of us with her ATV. At the entrance of the site, the guide Alejandro met us. He gave us an expert explanation in perfect English about the rock carvings nearby. Then he guided us to the entrance of the path that takes you down the waterfalls (4x4 car required, luckily we had one). The path itself is pretty easy to walk, it takes you down to a few waterfalls and pools (where you could swim, but we didn't). On the way, we heard monkeys, whose calls were perfectly imitated by Alejandro. The path is relatively new and was built by Alejandro and his father, he is considering to extend it and make a loop.

Hello,
My name is Brent and I am traveling to Costa Rica with my young family and mother in law. My boys are 3 and 4. I would like to know if you think that this might be a worthwhile tour for the family. Im not sure about the hike to the waterfall, but am sure we could negotiate at least part of it. A horseback ride is on my short list of things to do with the family. What is the best way to contact the guide to secure a trip? Thank you for your help.
