The idea of using an old prison to build a museum is fascinating but the museum experience itself is not. The entrance fee is relatively overpriced at 600 pesos for foreign visitors although the museum exhibits many themes such as maritime history, the prison and the prisoners as well as brief information on Antártica. The displays of the themes are not sufficiently interesting to attract the attention of the visitors and after a while you will find the urge to look for the emergency exit. The only hindrance is the ticket price, which makes you feel the need to stay a while longer to make the amount that you paid worthwhile.

The old prison has been turned into destination with both history and art. From the history of the prison with dioramas to a wing with local art there is a variety of things to see. If you are spending a day in Ushuaia, this is worth a visit.

A lot of information about Ushuaia's history. The can spend an hour or a day depending on how much information you want to take in. Well worth the trip.

This museum used to be the regional prison. The wings have been repurposed and now house exhibitions related to early expeditions to the Antarctic, early explorers to the area, early maps, as well as exhibitions of local wildlife. One wing has been retained in its original form as it was when it was an active prison and another wind provides a history of the prison and the activities and lifestyle of the inmates. Surprisingly there is also an art gallery inside on the wings with exhibits by local artists. There is also a shop with souvenirs available This is well worth a visit and guided tours in Spanish are available. Please note - large bags/backpacks have to be stored in a locker in the reception area (you are allocated a locker and retain the key) prior to being allowed into the museum

We walked to this museum located on the naval base. The building formerly housed the prison. The price was quite high and we did not have time to justify the cost, so did not go in.
