If you want to take a wonderful day trip out of Bariloche then what a better way to explore the surrounding areas than taking the magnificent 7 Lakes Road connecting the city of Bariloche in the Rio Negro Province with San Martin de los Andes in Neuquén province.
You'll go pass the 7 lakes, reason why this portion of Route 40, the equivalent of Route 66 in the U.S. is named after.
There are several view points and picturesque towns resembling the Bavaria Region of Germany.
It is a Road to be taken with time, no rush here!
Views are indeed amazing, it will take you a good 4 hours to reach San Martin de Los Andes stopping a long the way to enjoy the beautiful views.
I took this trip back in January 20191

We drove past 5 of the 7 lakes until we reached the Waterfall hike. The lakes were all beautiful with nice scenic outlooks. A must-do, if in the area.

One of the best scenic routes of the world! More than 7 lakes! Amazing views and places to visit between the two most beautiful and welcoming towns of Argentine Patagonia!

Hello! I went to San Martin de los Andes with my best friend two years ago, I can say that it is a magic place! For me is a Patagonian paradise and one of the most beautiful places I´ve ever been! San Martin de los Andes is a quiet place where you can relax and just enjoy the landscapes and the good energy but also you can do many activities like take a boat trip, climb mountains or take hiking and camping tours. If you want, you can rent a car and drive by yourself, don’t forget your camera because you´ll see epics landscapes that you will remember forever! I really recommend taking vacations here because it is a beautiful place and the local people are very friendly.

Weather be with you, we mean good weather. The place is beautiful. Have a good day's rest before you embark on route 40. There are cycling and other road users. Hazardous drive means a constant eye out for danger. Get the other person to take photos while you concentrate on driving.

Pretty landscapes and low traffic.
More beautiful in a sunny day.
Warning, no gas station in the route.

Ruta de los Siete Lagos - Rout of the Seven Lakes traces a winding path through an epic landscape of sweeping, multi hued forest, towering peaks and serene lakes. Touted as one of the most scenic drives in Argentina.

Do not forget your camera. You'll stop at every mirador to view the fantastic scenery of the Seven Lakes road. It's good to bring water and a lunch box as there are not many places to stop for food unless you are in Villa la Angostura or San Martin de los Andes or Bariloche. We did this trip from San Martin de los Andes to Villa la Angostura. Try to do it on a calm day, not windy as the lakes look amazing when calm.

Our expectations may have been too high. Indeed there are some very nice views, but eventually we just wanted to move on and arrive to Bariloche. If we did it again, we would spend more time in Bariloche, less in driving.
