After a few moments browsing, the very kind elderly volunteer told us a lot about the synagogue (this is only helpful if you understand Portuguese or have a translator to hand). I didn't get her name, but she is more than willing to answer questions...More

There really isn't much left to see at this little synagogue in the town of Tomar; however, I'm personally grateful that the community has seen fit to keep it open as a reminder that there was a Jewish community for many years in this Portuguese...More

This tiny and ancient synagogue is a remnant of the pre-Inquisition Jewish community. Somehow I was able to communicate with the elderly woman who was selling tickets for the visit, and she told me she was one of the two Jewish families still in Tomar....More

If you are in tomar and you have 30 minutes to spare this is worth your while. You get the story about the Jewish exodus from Portugal and a look in supposedly the oldest synagogue in the country.

While Jewish people were persecuted throughout Spain and Portugal in the 15th and 16th centuries, they enjoyed some protection in Tomar. And this was their synagogue. So it's a very interesting place worth a half hour visit. It's just quite unique.
