These types of places always upset me yet I always go and support them. Spain, and to a lesser extent Portugal, are a concern given that they expelled my ancestors in 1492 and 1497 respectively and then suffered their own decline after that. The massacres that took place and the forced conversions as well are a sad blight on these... More

Was built from memory in 1436 and only operated for 60 years then the Jews got kicked out of the country and the place used for many mundane purposes. An extrememly small building of little architectural merit, crammed in down a small alley. probably the least impressive religious building I have visited but of historic interest

The synagogue of Tomar is kept by an elderly lady who makes a point on keeping the dwindling Jewish heritage and community of Tomar alive. Take the visit to support her, it takes only a few minutes to listen to the history of the synagogue (one of the oldest in Portugal).

Yes, it is old. Yes, its historical value is unquestionable, but this synagog is still in a rather sorry state. It is further somewhat embarrasing to see so many names of donators of a rather irrelevant artifacts prominently displayed, while all the people who lived, worked and found a sancutuary here, seems totally forgotten.

There are only a couple of Jewish families in Tomar now so this is more an interesting insight into an ancient synagogue and the culture that surrounds it. All the signage is in Portuguese and the lovely lady guide didn't speak any other languages but between her speaking slowly and us using some inspired guesswork we understood most of what... More

The synagogue is a little bit hidden, but worth visiting. So on the way to the castle of when going back to the old town do not hesitate to devote a few minutes of your time to feel the history once again.

It brings reminders of the Middle Ages when Jews constituted important part of Portugese society, though the time has gone

The synagogue is a must see. It is from the 16th century and marks the tragedy of the Jewish population in Portugal that was eradicated during the awful inquisition period

Very interesting historical site. It is amazing that the Knights Templar, who built the original city, would build a Temple for the Jewish people residing in the area, since they were under Papal direction. Very interesting and worth a visit if you are in Tomar.

Wonderful old synagogue that has been restored thanks to contributions of visitors. Unfortunately a lot of the artifacts are not from the original synagogue but rather a collection from all over the world and include a Torah donation from California. The lovely lady that greets you does not speak English so you are on your own but if you are... More
