- SarahandPaoloSurrey, United Kingdom44 contributionsBeautiful nature reserve with lots of birdsThe reserve opens at 9am and we got there shortly afterwards to avoid the afternoon heat. We asked for a map at reception, which was in Spanish, but it showed us where everything was. There are toilets in the visitors’ centre, right by the entrance. We took our binoculars and were glad we did because we saw so many fantastic birds: stilts, godwits, common sandpipers, spoonbills, shovellers, choughs, whimbrels, gadwall, little grebe… We also saw lots of the fiddler crabs by the watermill. Sadly, no chameleons for us. We took our time walking round to appreciate all the wildlife and lovely views, and were there for just under three hours. Would definitely recommend if you like your birds and wildlife.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 3 October 2023
- OtyikondoHelsinki, Finland364 contributionsGreat spot for bird-watching all year round. This is a great spot for bird-watching all year round. Easy access with car parking at the end of Av. André Jordan, by the bridge that goes across to Gigi's beach restaurant. There are a couple of bird hides: the one facing a freshwater lake and the San Lorenzo Golf Course was particularly well-stocked, with bitterns, a little grebe, some western swamphens (sultana bird), ibises, and the inevitable egrets and herons, and also a whole crowd of shoveller ducks that had just flown in. Also spoonbills, whimbrels, turnstones, and a lot of plovers. Flamingoes are to be seen a bit further along the Ludo Trail towards Faro Airport. There was also an unexpected sighting of a little owl, hunting in daylight on a cloudy day. Definitely well worth a visit, or several, as the tidal conditions can affect what you see.Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 4 December 2023
- Lynda CWokingham, United Kingdom570 contributionsWonderful natural park close to OlhaoThis is a wonderful natural park bordering Ria Formosa. Full of walks . Map provided, not in English but trails are marked well. Toilets, snacks from machine (not a cafe) and good exhibition in visitor centre so do that 1 st. Small entry fee. Off main road from Olhao to Tavira. Brown sign on right to Ria Formosa. Follow road over railway to end and it is on left. We spent about 3 hours, slow walk with many stops to see the wonderful flowers, birds etc. It was March. Spring flowers were beautiful. Fiddler crabs on yellow path by water past tidal mill building. Many birds including egrets, azure winged magpie, black winged stilt, grey heron and many more. Take snacks, sunscreen, hat, water, rucksack. I got bitten by insects so also have insect repellent. Highly recommended.Visited March 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 25 March 2024
- RDS61Chester, United Kingdom2,052 contributionsGood wildlife and more. The park has a nature trail that is well marked out and easy to walk round with hides for watching bird, and also ruins of Roman fish salting pits, a tide mill and an old horse powered water pump. The scenery is also beautiful. There is parking on site and the entry fee is €3 per person.Visited June 2024Travelled soloWritten 8 June 2024
- rainbowdolphin90Edinburgh, United Kingdom773 contributionsA good walk with informative notice boardsThis nature reserve is easily accessed from Olhao. The ticket office has no maps, but easy to take a photo on my phone of the sample map. In the end we didn't need it as the trails are well signposted and easy to follow. We had no difficulty finding ur way on the trail we took. There are lots of interesting information boards throughout the trail. The trail winds through pine forest to the visitor's centre (toilets available here) We were unable to explore the visitor's centre as a local children's dance school were using the park for their annual show and the centre was crowded with parents etc. The trail winds down to the coast where there is an old tidal mill. The views from the roof of the mil are amazing. Spend some time watching the fiddler crabs on the estuary. The trail winds further along the coast, past the ruins of a Roman fish preserving complex. Then back through the forest, past 2 bird hides to the entrance. It was a good walk and the notice boards helped explain the terrain and wildlife.Visited July 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 6 August 2024

We weren’t sure what to expect as we couldn’t find much information about the place before we visited but it turned out to be really enjoyable. We walked there from central Olhão (passing through a slightly rough industrial area) but once we got there we loved it. The entry price was very cheap and we spent around 2 hours strolling around learning about the area and meeting some of its local wildlife (fiddler crabs, chameleon, and some flamingos).. and on a nice sunny day it was just really peaceful to walk around.

The man who operates the reception area was lovely and friendly and was so enthusiastic about the park. Only issue was maps not in English but we managed in French.
We were there off peak so not enough volunteers to open the bird hospital so we shouted “Get well soon” over the fence.
Tide Mill was interesting as I’ve never seen one before. Fresh water lake hide was lovely and calm and we spent a while here watching the ducks.
We were told there was a cafe but we seemed to end up in the canteen of the people who worked there and they were happy enough for us to be there.
We were told there were a lot of chameleons around but we didn’t see any, maybe they were just very good. We didn’t look that hard.
It’s a lovely walk, people had brought picnics to spend the day.
It’s cheap to go in so please visit and support.

The Quinta de Marim is an amazing reserve. To get there we travelled by train from Faro and then walked to the reserve. It is easy. It was tricky to find the way and we wantered around aimlessly until we figured it out - leave the station on the north side and walk east for around 30 minutes keeping the railway line on the right. You will eventurally see a sign pointing right to the reserve. There are a few cafes en-route if you get thirsty. There is a small charge to enter the reserve. There are toilets at the entrance and at the education centre. The exhibition there is a 'must'. The birds are amazing. The first bird I saw was a waxbill sitting on a chainlink fence. Azure winged magies are everywhere. We also saw bee eaters, Kentish plovers, black-winged stilts, Sardinian warblers, hoopoe, cattle and little egrets, spoonbill, avocet. The tidemill is currently being restored and it is worth looking at even now. I would love to go again, duing the migration season. Tip: take pleny of water with you.

We arrived next to the beach of Faro, entrance.
No one there. The entrance looked abandoned and dirty. (maybe mid-September is low season?).
The walk to the beach took about an hour and a half. We saw a lot of birds, crabs, planes and also decaying fish floating on the lagoons.
After walking along the edge of a fenced golf course for quite a while, we crossed the bridge and reached the beach.
For the whole hike we walked for 8.9 km.
Take everything you need with you.
Water, snacks, good walking shoes and beach gear.
We did not meet anyone in charge of the park, nor toilets, water or trash cans.

Views were amazing it was really hot and we probably should have not visited. Didn't manage to see any wildlife to photograph. The reason for the very low review was we paid 3e each, no map, just told follow green arrows. Expected a toilet at the picnic area. Spent the whole 2 hours trying to find where the toilets might be. Am happy having a wee anywhere but I NEEDED the toilet. It completely ruined the experience and the heat meant no wildlife to be seen... Maybe 3 small birds, 3 ducks that flew away from the lake.. And that was it! A much better morning was spent at the salt pans. I'm sure had it been a different season and toilets available then it could have been much better!

Hi guys,
You pay one small fee which covers entrance, a brochure and parking.
Staff was very friendly.
Due the time of year (january) we didn't see as much flora and fauna as can be expected in summer season. However, we had an interesting 3 hour walk in the sunshine all around the park, seeing the old Roman salting tank ruins, the tide mill, the dunes and lagoon. There is a hide. There were some flamingo's. It was a quick trip from nearby Albufeira where we were staying.
Regards
Schliek.

The Algarve, located in the south of Portugal, is an area well known for its large beaches facing the Atlantic Ocean. We were guests at the home of dear friends who recommended places to visit, where nature still plays an important role, despite the large tourist flows. One of these places is the Parque Natural da Ria Formosa. It is a wetland made up of channels, islands, lagoons, salt marshes and sandbanks that extends for 60 km along the Algarve coast, from the Ancão peninsula, near Faro, to the beach of Manta Rota (Cacela Velha ).
The variety of ecosystems present attracts different species of animals, aquatic birds, but also mammals and even chameleons, which are difficult to spot and considered protected fauna. You can choose different ways to visit these places: from trips with rented bicycles, pedaling on paths laid out on wooden paths, to renting kayaks and SUPs, to birdwatching together with an expert guide, to boat excursions at sunset .
Just be careful not to choose the hottest hours of the day, in the case of departures in summer, because the sun is very strong.

Hi can I swim at the place?

No idea but it was quite reasonable. The park itself had a minimal fee and the boat trip was also reasonably priced.

Hi Natasha
Ria Formasa is a protected area on on the mainland and also on the islands. It is along the mainland coast and you can start it anywhere. To get over to all the island's a ferry goes from Olhao frequently.

Can one just enter and view the park on foot and how much is the entrance fee?

Sorry to be tardy with a reply - been to Portugal for some sun!
Yes you can just walk into Jesmond Dene at any of several points. No charges and a nice place to spend a few hours - even better if you have kids, they'll love it.

Apparently there is new video evidence of raw sewage being poured into the Rio Formosa from the waste water treatment plant between Faro and Olhao, the council and local environmental agencies ae doing nothing about it.
Olhao is famous for it's fish and shellfish served in almost evey restaurant in town.
Now you face food poisoning from eating the catch from Rio Formosa.!
the Mayor of Olhao , Antonio Pina must take action.!
I visit Olhao a lot last time was December 2017.
There is for once visible evidence of this, go to the ferry ticket office in Olhao and see for yourself.
Please help this campaign and urge the authorities to stop this pollution. Olhao is fast becoming a vibrant buzzing tourist City, I love Olhao and it's islands but this pollution must end now.
Bomb social media and shame the council. Nothing else will work.

Can you get to the park from Fuseta by public transport?
Written 15 October 2017
Fuseta is part of the Ria Formosa which stretches from near Quartiera in the west to beyond Tavira in the east. You can ferry to one of the islands from there.
The Ria Formosa estuary is a labyrinth of canals, islands, marshland and sandy beaches that extend 60 km along the Algarve coast between the beaches of Garrão and Manta Rota.
It’s well worth driving to Olhao or Faro to get the ferry to other islands, and see the wild life. Barrill beach and it’s train was one of our favourites near Tavira.
