Not As Interesting As It Could Be
Nov 2020
You can either visit the synagogue on your way up to view the castle, or on your way back down to the town. The museum is on 2 floors, the ground floor and a basement floor. The basement floor was unlit and I had to use the torch on my phone to explore it. All of the information for exhibits was in Portuguese, so non speakers of the language might find this frustrating.

Interesting visit. Rude staff

Well worth a visit. Fascinating insight into the Jewish community in Castelo de Vide and a moving memorial to their persecution by the inquistion.

We committed the appalling crime of going back to see a couple of the rooms again and found ourselves back at the reception. The woman on the reception couldn't have been more rude and was clearly not happy that my girlfriend doesn't speak Portuguese.

Recommended. Free entry.

A must see site in Castelo de Vide
Mar 2020
one of the highlights of the visit to the jewish quarter of Castelo de Vide, the museum is very well kept and shows how the site served many other purposes than the religious one, it meant it was part of the center of jewish life in town

Medieval Synagogue

This building is now a museum. Although it is an interesting place to visit only if you have an interpreter with you. Everything is in Portuguese.

another dead museum
Jul 2019 • Couples
one of those small places that seems like it was done because it needed to be done for some other reason than having a museum. some pieces are nice, some are not, lot's of papers with stuff written. they are really not sure if it was ever really a synagogue.

Small Jewish Museum - Size Isn't Everything
Dec 2018 • Couples
The Sinagoga de Castelo de Vide may be small but every remembrance of the Jewish people of Portugal and the lives they led is worthy. Located near the border with Spain, Jews from Spain emigrated to Castelo de Vide to join the local Jewish population. The synagogue is located in what was the Jewish Quarter.

Interesting but needs more signage
Nov 2017 • Friends
This is an interesting old house which was once used as a sinagogue. It was an interesting place and yet we left not feeling like we had really learned that much about its Jewish history. It needs more signage and information for the visitor.

What synagogue, where???
Nov 2017 • Friends
Recovered house situated in the old Jewish quarter.
Apart from half a dozen objects it has nothing else pertaining to the Jewish faith. They themselves admit, in one of their information boards, that there are no archaeological findings that can attest that the house was formerly a place of cult.

Somewhat Disappointed
Sep 2017 • Couples
We often visit synagogue museums while we are traveling. We were a bit disappointed here. The museum was so dark, it was hard to see. We found it very small and not containing much about the history of Jews being banished from Spain, etc. What we did know we had learned by doing a bit of reading before we traveled to Castelo de Vide. The walk there was amazing however.

Small Jewish Museum
Jul 2017 • Couples
This former synagogue is now an evocative museum set within the Jewish Quarter of the town. You walk through a number of small rooms with low ceilings filled with various exhibits. This museum filled out the experience of walking through the Jewish Quarter. I found the museum more a place of remembrance than a museum.
