Overview
More
Built by Thomas Bain in the 1860's, the Prince Alfred Pass (R339) is a dirt/gravel mountain pass between Knysna/Plettenbergbay and Avontuur/Uniondale. It is a scenic route with spectacular views and interesting flora. Please note that this is not a shortcut from the Langkloof to Knysna/Plettenbergbay. Having been built about 150 years ago, parts of this historic pass is very winding and narrow. In some areas the surface of the road is eroded and there are a few potholes along the way.

We drove Deon Graaff-Reinet to Plettenberg Bay through Prince Alfred pass. It’s an absolute joy to drive as the gravel road is fairly even. As long as you drive within the speed limit 40km/h you should be fine. The road is also very easily driven...More

Great views and a must do on your bucket list. A pity that Angie’s G Spot refreshment venue is to be demolished. There are no other refreshment stops for motorcycle riders on this route. Pity.

We drove from Plett up to Graaf-Reinet and took Prince Albert's Pass, having been told to do it "at least once". Some stunning views but the road is one of the quite typical dirt/gravel tracks you often find in South Africa, in places very narrow,...More

Be prepared this is a 70km plus gravel road that is very uneven and very narrow in paces. With sheer drops at some of the narrow points, if you meet a car coming the other way backing up would be extremely difficult. In dry weather...More

Nothing short of stunning. The fynbos, the proteas, the valley`s, hills and mountains the streams and waterfalls are a sight to behold. Uniquely different to most parts of the world. Recommended

One of the most beautiful and scenic drives I have done in SA. Dirt road and average speed of 40km but worth the effort. Quaint village of de Vlugt where you can enjoy a hearty cup of coffee and homemade patatkoek.

Having lived in Nigeria and Cameroon, driving on dirt and graded road holds no fascination for me. However, if that’s what you want to do, this offers a safe experience and is only mildly challenging. There are some nice views across primary natural forests and...More

This is a truly spectacular drive with some of the most breathtaking views. We managed it at a slow pace in a small hire car, but the roads are good enough to manage. It is bit hairy at times but definitely worth it
