The tree is getting old and the responsible people try their best to keep the tree, but with only one stem left it is not an impressive site.

I believe this old tree is beautiful and has been part of George for a very long time. I think that a legend has been made up around slaves having been chained there but it is a good story. It's in the main street and...More

The tree itself is old but it was never used to lock up slaves. The chain is much later and it was used to lock the tennis court roller to the tree. It's probably a made up legend. If you are close by go and...More

It's a tree...and not that big. The story is a fabrication so don't bother. There are bigger trees and far more interesting stories

This beautiful old tree is called the Old Slave Tree but it was actually never a slave tree. The chain around the trunk was used to keep the roller of the tennis courts safe from youngsters who always stole the roller! A beautiful garden and...More

When reading the urban legend that the chain was used to chain slaves to the tree while being auctioned ............then reading the contradicting facts that the chain and lock was from many years later...... It was used to chain a (clay tennis court) roller to...More

This is probably the most historic site in George, which otherwise has very little to interest tourists. The tree still has a piece of chain and a small lock embedded in the trunk to which the slaves were bound when being sold. We would recommend...More

Stopped to see, an interesting legend, but not well presented or signposted. At least can say that we have been there and done that. If you are interested in South African history, worth the two minute visit...

I was just caught up in the 'legend' and imaged the slaves of yesteryear chained to the tree. I don't want to spoil the surprise, so visit this magnificent specimen of an oak tree to find out the 'real' story of the chain in the...More
