This was a very affordable train journey, but very long and we were two hours late getting from Joburg to Port Elizabeth. Four of us were upgraded from one shared compartment to one each. Our compartments were very cold at night but the dining car was toasty warm. The beds were comfy and the linens were clean. The toilets were... More

Travelled from Joburg to Cape Town. Train departed late which was OK. No one in a rush. Food was average to good. Compartments clean and roomy enough. Frustration was a more than 2 hour stop on top of the late departure at Touws River. Not sure when we will see Cape Town.

Wanting to relive the experience of 'luxury train travel', my husband booked our return trip from Cape Town on the Premier Classe. In the years since we last traveled this way, the service has deteriorated to an extent that I would not recommend this to anyone, nor would I be inclined to use this service again. ever. - We were... Three of us travelled back home from Johannesburg to Cape Town after a business trip. I had battled like mad to book online, as the system needed 4 ID's and we were only 3. The telephone lines weren't answered, but we booked and confirmed via email eventually. We boarded the train early, but 30mins before departure the an apologetic catering... More

The train was two hours late. As the train progressed the schedule finally became 6 hours late and we were heading to miss our plane despite planning a six hours buffer. The toilets were poor with no soap and run out of paper at one point (take your own). The café ran out of chips within one hour of departing.... More

We travelled from Cape Town to Johannesburg on the Shosholoza Meyl two weeks ago - it was our second trip in three years on this route. It's very hard to give this journey a star rating, because there are things that are frustrating about the experience - things that don't work as efficiently as you'd want. And yet, and yet...... This was an amazing experience! It was not fine train travel but it felt like true South African travel. Compartment was okay, food was good! The biggest problem were the children, running loose, screaming, opening my compartment door peering in...did I mention the running and screaming?? Estimated travel was 23 hours...actual travel was 28 hours. I would do this again... More

Broken air conditioning, rail cars filling with fumes, and over 10 hours late. And they'll ignore any emails once you've travelled (Gareth Laing). AVOID.
