We ate salads and a bottle of wine one night for a light supper after a very hectic day of touring, and Planet Bar was perfect. The setting was quiet, elegant and romantic (we loved the starry, sparkly ceiling and view of the garden); the waitress was responsive and knowledgeable about the wine list; my "deconstructed" BLT salad was light,... Very aware that this is a five star property and did not expect things to be value for money at all but I was quite surprised. Paid R50 for a can of Grapetiser and R100 for a bottle of CBC Amber Weiss seems a bit excessive. The service we received seemed extremely sluggish as we waited for 10 minutes before... More

Totally agree with previous reviewer, the Nellie is over run with cheap package tour types and has lost its tranquil calm and charm. The buildings are of course still lovely but its a bun fight. Arrived at 4pm - tail end of tea to meet friends for drinks. ppl taking photo's everywhere - hoards of badly dressed non residents. The... More

The Lounge at the "Nellie" is our favourite "far from the maddening crowd" spot for a relaxing afternoon or evening tea or coffee. The setting is beautiful old-world charm with attentive, friendly service. Wide range of teas (provided by Nigiro) or coffees. Also a well stocked bar, as you would expect from a 5 star establishment. High tea is also... More

We were a party of seven who had enjoyed the last sitting of the high tea at the mount nelson. Decided to finish off the day with cocktails and sparkling wine at the Planet Bar. We were warmly welcomed and served promptly. I had a sensational strawberry dacqueri which tasted like more! Loved the quaint snacks on offer. Waitress was... More

Visited with friends on a Thursday night for a brief post dinner drink. Serve an excellent Negroni and very nice complimentary nibbles in an interesting setting (extremely upmarket decor) without service being too stiff.

Group of 14 spend an evening at the bar, Not particularly focused or alert team on duty. We could only pay the exact waiter who it took over 15 min. to find when we asked for the bill. Not impressive, reminded me of a cheap charter tour destination in the 80's.

I wanted to visit the famous mount nelson hotel and so opted for an afternoon tea. The place is packed with non residents most of them noisy and busy at taking silly pictures. The hotel itself is lovely, a reminder of the colonial era, and gardens are really awesome. As for the bar: service is horrible, slow and difficult to... More

We had lunch in the garden of the hotel. Snack menue was provided from the Planet Bar. Variety of food and drinks. We had Club Sandwich and Ceasar's Salad. Good quality, very friendly and caring staff. We always enjoy having drinks and a bite at the Mount Nelson. Beautiful location and atmosphere.

I am not sure why we go back to The Planet Bar, it's just medicore. There is absolutely no atmosphere whatsoever and even though its December it's just plain boring.
