So much to see and so different that the glittering and modern tourist areas. Not all is bleak, there are a variety of housing opportunities to see, there are attractions like the Nelson Mandela House and the thought provoking Hector Pieterson museum. All helps put...More

Shocking comparison to wealth of nearby Jburg neighborhoods. a mixture of modest middle class homes on fringes of SOWETO to sweltering collection of shanty homes w/o running water, indoor plumbing, electricity. But the people were happy and friendly. no worries for tourist. only street in...More

We went on a full day Soweto city tour. Our driver, Walter from Ilios Travel, was amazing. He was a youth freedom fighter and was exiled for many years and his perspective to before/after apartheid was invaluable. He drove us to many of the various...More

If you wish to understand the impact of Apartheid on a people, this area is a " must see". A drive or walk thru the neighborhoods provides a window into the lives of economically disparate people.

We visited Soweto during a city tour. We stopped to visit a portion of Soweto and had the opportunity to meet and speak with some of the residents. A visit to this area will demonstrate that, while apartheid has been eliminated, the after effects are...More

We are coming to Johannasburg at the beginning of January and are limited on time and possibly the day as well. Top of my list of things that I want to see is Soweto. Could you give me some idea of time I should budget for travel and things to visit in Soweto making the visit from the Center of Johannasburg on Sunday in January ?

I can highly recommend Ntombi, who runs Usizo Lwenkosi Tours (see my review on her TripAdvisor page). She lives in Soweto and therefore knows where and where not to go - don't let fearmongers put you off! This is a place... More
