This is one amazing place, come see it for yourself and not believe what the media always say how bad this place is. Good to have a guide when touring this area, you will better understand why some houses are so modern and some still with tin roof.

We visited a few non-touristy places because we were doing an assessment for children's oral health. The places we went are where the squatters live. We felt safe, we talked and played with the children and decided that in November we will go back with a full dental team. The warmth of the hospitality of the people is amazingly beautiful.... Enter from M1 and you pass Baragwanath Hospital (Bara), which competes with Mustapha Pacha in Algiers for the most important hospital in Africa. Follow Chris Hani to Regina Mundi Catholic church, which saw Desmond Tutu, an Anglican priest, taking the stage during apartheid: early oecumesism> U-turn, back to Poetgieter, which is not anymore Potgieter, toward White city, and then left-left... When those of us of a certain age here Soweto, it conjures up dire images of apartheid and a country gone wrong. There are memorials to those awful days, but a tour of the area is eye opening. Yes, there are still poor ghettos without plumbing or reliable electricity. But there are also upper middle class neighborhoods, shopping, and dining.... More

Visiting Soweto provided a real glimpse into live in Johannesburg. There is so much history here and worth the visit.

Bought the extension of the CityBus tour and I am glad I did so. I enjoyed visiting Mandela's home and learn more about Soweto and the townships in general. Worth the detour

Was brought here by a local friend. There are plenty of organised tour buses or you can get here by train. Well worth the visit. We found, that despite the poverty and the poor housing of many, the place was spotless - the pride the families - especially the woman of the house - had in keeping their shacks clean... More

I'd recommend this tour to everyone since it paints a much more complex picture of Soweto than the one the media tends to present. You need the right guide though to put it in context. Yes there are some parts with high levels of poverty but also very middle class parts too. Just like any city you get the good,... More

To be honest we were pretty uncomfortable driving through here. I would not recommend driving on your own . The poverty is pretty stark . As hard as it is to see the contrast of the way of life between the have and the have nots ..it's an important place to see.
