I would advised you to do a sightseeing tour which would offer you and your familty safe trips throughout Joburg. I did the tour and visited the Top of Joburg, Soweto, and Apartheid Museum and felt very safe and had no issues and people were nice and friendly everywhere. The Soweto and Aparthied Musuem tours were both wonderful choices.
