This imposing building, situated in Market Square and designed in the Victorian Gothic style, has been closed for some time, in order that vital maintenance work be done. Therefore it is not at all possible to gain entry into the building, either as a tourist or a library card holder. The librarian in charge of the Africana section is the... More

Step back in time and marvel at a hidden gem in PE . A wonderful old building gracing the Main Street in town . There is a really lovely reference section where one can peruse the old newspapers and absorb history . If you are a PE Resident , then take advantage and book out a good book . Unfortunately... The library was closed so we only saw the outside but the front elevation is well worth a look. In front of the facade is a large statue of Quern Victoria which we were hold had been defaced by "activists", but is now happily completely restored and back to its best.

We visited the outside of the library on 2.September 2015 and spoke with a woman working there, who informed us that due to a leaky roof & water infiltrating into the building from the hill on which the library is built, mold has taken hold. She said it would be closed at least a year (note the regular hours were... More

We did not go into the library but viewed it from outside and marvelled at the beautiful Victorian Gothic achitecture. Officially opened in 1902 it stands proudly in the Market (Vuyisile Mini) Square Unfortunately, the Sicilian Marble statue of Queen Victoria which was erected in 1903 has been shrouded in grey cloth due to political protests. This is such a... More

This old Victorian building is unique in so many ways. The beautiful woodwork and wrought iron give the building a special appeal. Ask the librarians to show you the wood and leather friezes, the hidden lifts and the many other hidden stories. The façade was built in England and shipped out to South Africa and re-erected here. The building was... More
