When I was young I saw the movie Rio Grande where the cavalry fort did not have a stockade surrounding it. I was so disappointed, I then did research and found that lots of Forts did not have stockades, In the past few years, I have been able to go to two of those. Camp Verde and Fort Apache both... Only 1.8 miles off the hwy Only paved half way then dirt...rough either way. Do-able by car for sure. "Permit required" read the sign... No info on the site or Rangers (ha! on the rez?) to ask but very original...not much preserved. Fort Apache (closed on holidays) has some. Room after room after room. Only a few had roofs that... We had read mixed reviews so our expectations were not high going into the experience. We found the museum and building interesting. Kids enjoyed catching horn toads and lizards. The ruins were a short easy hike from the parking lot. The road to get there is paved except for the last 1/4 of a mile. We enjoyed exploring some trails... More

The website was a lot more inspiring than the visit. There are still some old buildings but only one you can go in, the rest are being used for other things. Museum a bit small and the Kinibisha Ruins are neglected. Made quite a detour to visit and not sure it was worth it. Scenery to get there was beautiful... More

The ruins were interesting to see but the Apache Museum was a disappointment. I can say that it could be a much better attraction with a little work and maintenance. There was trash laying around and the overall appearance is one lacking reasonable care.

We took a short drive from Pinetop to visit these places. The girl at the front desk was new, and really didn't know much of anything, including directions. With a GPS and patience we were able to find the ruins. The Fort was disappointing, the ruins too were a bit disappointing. Not much to do in Pinetop, so take the... More

Fort Apache Historic Park is the place to experience Apache history and culture. Its worth the visit to help understand the Apache heritage and traditions.

The fort is very interesting but only had limited access to the buildings. The museum is interesting and the grounds ate well kept. It was a nice place to stretch out legs. The ruins are really neat and the buildings were so meticulously put up, the stonework is tremendous. We went at sundown and got impressive pictures!

We were staying in Pinetop-Lakeside and decided to check out the local sites. Being a fan of the John Wayne movie "Fort Apache " I decided to check it out. It wasn't anything like I imagined. The museum had interesting history facts and the Roosevelt School was also there. Along with the paid fee for the museum included the Kinishba... More
