This is not Nara, not even Kamakura scale. But I would like to believe this is the best. My home town favorite. It's less known, so you never have to feel you are rushed or squeezed in. You can spend ten minutes or three hours....More

It certainly is a large Buddha statue at almost 16m in height, weighing around 60 tonnes and being forged from copper. It took almost 30 years to produce and replaced the wooden Daibutsu which had burnt down several times in the course of it's life....More

Worthy of just a quick stop, the temple and the large Buddha is best viewed in the afternoon because the statue is facing the west. Thus in the morning if one takes the photo it will be overcast and only a silhouette can be seen...More

This Daibutsu sits in the middle of town. Not as grandeur as the other two Great Buddahas. Why? Because it was built by the local people of Takaoka. The Nara Daibutsu was built by the Emperor. The Kamakura Daibutsu was built by Shogun. People wanted...More

The most handsome Buddha is worthy of a quick stop on the way to or from Kojo Park. Make sure you have a green tea ice cream from the store diagonally across from the Buddha.
