Read several reviews that indicated they were glad they arranged for a cab ride for the 1 mile segment from the ship to the trail head. I will say that the last segment of that initial mile was almost as steep as the climb, but we traversed part of the way with one of the charming locals AND got to see the river chalk full of spawning salmon. Very cool. Great lookout about half way up the trail. I understand lots of folks turn around at that point but we trudged on to the top. Great views and we saw mountain goats grazing on the northwest slope. Wish we could have had time to hike this mountain at an enjoyable pace, but committed to an 11:00 turn around time. We got to the top by 11:00, but did have to haul butt to do it.…

Beautiful hike up to the salmon hatchery. One area up a hill, otherwise flat. Follow map from visitors center to fish hatchery.

You are in a rainforest with thick growth so you don't see much that's more than 50 yards away. This is not an easy hike and the trail often is very rocky. It was raining the day we hiked it and we got pretty soggy so we turned around after about 45 minutes, but really enjoyed it and have some spectacular photos. Temps were about 55 the day we hiked. We also arranged for transportation back from the trailhead.…
