Overview
More
Mendenhall Glacier is easily accessible via roads from the local airport, cruise ship terminal and state ferry terminal. Our facility and lands are managed by the federal government through the United States Forest Service. Federal passes are accepted and sold s well as daily passes. There is a visitor center with a theater showing a 15-minute film on Mendenhall Glacier, a bookstore operated by nonprofit organization Discovery Southeast, and exhibits on wildlife, history, and glacial and geological changes. Rangers provide talks at various indoor and outdoor sites in summer. Open hours in summer are daily 8am to 7:30pm. Due to wildlife and bears, no food is allowed outdoors from April-November. There is no beverage or food service available to prevent bears from becoming food-conditioned. Nearby Steep Creek is the spawning stream for wild sockeye salmon from late July through early September. Later in the fall, a run of coho salmon spawn in the creek. Porcupines can be seen foraging on leaves in deciduous trees. Beavers are visible early in the morning and in the evening. Learn about Alaska and the natural world around the glacier and lake. Enjoy a one-hour hike to 400-foot-tall Nugget Falls. Other trails lead to different habitats. In winter, the visitor center is open Friday-Sunday from 10am to 4pm and closed on federal holidays.

Beautiful waterfall and Glaciers. Did not take the long trail to the waterfalls, but could still see it from the scenic trail. Visitor center also has a great view of the glacier. If you have the time, take this tour

We have visited twice, once 9 years ago. The glacier continues to recede. We also went to the Mendenhall gardens which were very interesting. They are part of the rain forest.

It's fun getting here and even more fun when you show up to find the beauty it has to show you. I would highly recommend this trip.

By far the neatest place to see both a glacier and a waterfall. Salmon were in the streams so some trails were closed.... but overall very neat place to see.

We very much enjoyed the glacier. We decided to take the mile walk along a path to get as close as we could. You cannot get on the glacier but seeing it at a distance, plus the small chunks of glacier floating past is beautiful....More

Be prepared to be packed like sardines with 4 cruise ships in port. Other than that, the glacier and nugget falls are worth the trip!

The staff was extremely knowledgeable, happy to share their knowledge and most willing to advise and instruct. The exhibits were a little dumbed down. The entire setup seemed appropriate for the typical cruise ship passenger. Would have hoped for more details on cave formation in...More

Worth the drive to see the glacier but if you aren't up for hiking don't expect to spent a lot of time here. It is beautiful! And there are viewing spots without a long walk.

Make sure to wear layers! Most of the tours provide you with rain gear so you don't have to worry about that. My husband and I both wore jeans (mine were a more flexible fabric). Then we wore t-shirts, covered by a light... More

Don't take the tours. I did. My family took a cab and then hiked to the closest point. They loved it. They spent time at the water fall and got great shots of glacier. I took photo tour through princess and only got as close... More

Check the weather to see if it will be clear or not at Mendenhall. I'd probably do whale watching first then take the blue bus to Mendenhall. They run every 15 minutes or so from the docks to the glacier and are not very... More
