This beautiful wilderness is a highlight. Our (top) guide Cheryl Mullins from Rainbow Glacier Adventures took us along here to witness bears feeding on salmon near a weir. Biologists were nearby studying also. Eagles on the opposite bank kept a close eye on things. You could write a book here.

Photographed three brown bears along Chilkoot River. A Mom and two cubs allowed good photos as they were busy eating fish.

We did a bear watching excursion on our tour and we had a great time. They took us along the Chilkoot. The guides were great and worked hard to get us as near as possible to the bears while keeping us safe.

We were on a fishing tour in Haines. We found the views of the Chilkoot River breathtaking as we made our way to Chilkoot Lake. Our fishing guide saw some cars parked and many out taking photos, so he was nice enough to stop also. We had a superb time watching a bear and cub doing salmon fishing for about... More

When I first arrived in Alaska I sought to understand why so many Alaska rivers are so wide and shallow. It's got to do with the amount of sediment that they carry (lots) and the intensity of peak flows, especially during spring thaw. Whether you see them nearly dry or raging flows (like today) they are pretty intense. We had... More

My wife and I spend our annual vacation here. It is difficult to think of a more relaxing and amazing location in driving distance of Whitehorse. Here you can fish for salmon, watch eagles and brown bears and seals, and admire nature at its finest. The road beside the river can get busy, particularly when a cruise ship is visiting.... More

We were on an Alaskan cruise and stopped for a day in Haines. We rented a car for the day. At about 4 pm, we drove to the Chilkoot River to look for bears. We were able to see 4 bears between 5 - 6:30 pm. It is a beautiful location!! Very peaceful. Just be warned that when the cruise... More
