Reachable after about 2 km of dirt road from the coastal road, this public beach (north of the private area of the Sofitel) extends for a long stretch in a beautiful area full of greenery. Despite being completely devoid of brick structures, fresh water showers and several food trucks are available for food and drinks. Very popular with locals, this beach extends for a long stretch before the coral reef and is characterized by water of a blue-green transparency that takes your breath away.

Unbelievable. Sunsets were to die for, the people were so kind. It was a paradise however the government needs to step up and take control of the stray dog problem. There were injured and starving dogs everywhere, it was really hard to see. I never felt afraid of the dogs but with as much money that is going into tourism a simple spay and neutered program needs to be implemented along with animal control. Im a little amazed they have let it get this bad.

Once I got a rental car, I made a beeline for Tamae Beach. It's a public beach, part of the lagoon where the Sofitel is. First day I went was Sunday. I got there early to snorkel which was simply amazing. By the time I finished, locals were having barbecues, hanging out, playing music. What a great place. Went back this morning (Monday) to snorkel more. It was a lot quieter of course, but still an absolute treasure. Spent two hours running down the battery in my underwater camera. I will go back one more time before I leave. (I did hear from a local that they are going to build another hotel there and take over part of the beach, which is a shame.)

I walked there from my Accommodation. Beautiful beach. Also excellent snorkeling. In this regard, it should be considered that the current generally pulls towards the Sofitel. So it has to be taken into account. It is advisable to bring fins. I had read that coral is more beautiful in front of the pier with overwater Bungalows of digital. In fact, that's true, but I saw many more fish, including a blackfin shark, in the coral garden of the public beach, in the part bordering the Sofitel. At the beginning there is a sandy part, where, however, you can meet interesting fish. To reach the most interesting part with the coral reef of must swim about 60/100 meters, until you reach and pass the yellow bows.

This was our favorite beach to visit during our stay on Moorea. It was relatively easy to find and not too far from Toatea lookout. once you turn off the main road, it’s a pretty bumpy dirt/rock road full of potholes. Just drive slowly and dodge as many as you can. Ample parking and shoreline available. There are coconut trees and a few shade spots between the parking and the beachfront. The reef is very easy to access. It’s mostly a sandbar on the left side of the beach, and as you move to the right toward the Sofitel resort bungalows it becomes reef. The area just before the Sofitel bungalows had the best snorkeling we had on all of Moorea, with extremely healthy, mature reef, no signs of coral bleaching, and tons of fish. It’s pretty shallow (5-8’ deep) throughout and makes for east snorkeling. There were plenty of areas to explore it was a good amount of sandy spots in between the coral that you can stand on if you need a break. We brought some bread out there during one of our ventures and the fish were very friendly!

We stayed at the Sofitel two nights, and really enjoyed the beach there. The snorkeling is absolutely amazing, and the beach just beautiful. Half the beach is private to the guests at the resort, but it keeps going into a public beach further away from the Sofitel.

This was not our fav beach on Moorea but still worth visiting. The bathrooms have no toilet paper. The beach was not crowded at all which was nice and we brought a picnic lunch. We found lots of ants. The water was very nice but we didn't have great snorkeling, maybe we were in the wrong spot?

Don't be fooled by limited coral near the shore. Swim out about a 100m towards the barrier reef and you'll find amazing coral and fish. Mask, fins and snorkel recommended. Ample parking. Bring a picnic.

One of the best beaches in Moorea, frequented by tourists and locals, with soft white sand and great reefs for snorkeling. Easy to find and plenty of parking space. Not a lot of shade so take hats and/or an umbrella.

This was our last stop on our round the island tour in our little rent car. Beautiful drive-up long, long beach. Beautiful clear and shallow wading for a long way out. What a memory!

We are keen to know how much the coral bleaching has affected the tropical fish life?
We do underwater photography of pretty fish and don’t want to go somewhere that has few fish.

Temae Beach does not have much in the way of coral or tropical fish. There are some very tiny juvenile fish around the shore line, but not much else. It is just a beautiful beach that is perfect for relaxing. We went out boat diving several days and saw lots of lemon sharks and black tip reef sharks. We also saw clown fish on most of our shallow dives.

I have read that there are no bars, restaurants, etc right on Temae beach, but could someone please give a tip that where is the closest facility to have a good beer at? :-) Thanks.

My family (wife, 3 kids and I) may travel to Moorea in December for around 15 days. I'm a bit worried that there won't be enough to do there for that long. Are there activities at the beach and other places that will be fun? Could you also tell me what eating at restaurants cost you on average?

How far is this beach from the cruise ship dock? Is there any transportation from the dock? Thank you
Written 1 September 2017
About a 20 minute drive. Taxi would be best. I would probably say it's around $20-25 American dollars

How far is Temae Beach from the ferry transportation?

Better late than never. I guess uhcoogdebi has meanwhile been there.
I am currently on the island.
My estimates are as follows (based on the note below):
- car: five minutes
- bike: 20 minutes
- walking: well below one hour
Note: Once you reach the entrance of the Sofitel you may ask the guards if they let you pass through their premises to the beach. This is an extreme shortcut and it avoids the uphill/downhill section on the main road.
